STARMINATOR cartoon: Angela: “JUST A FEW DAYS UNTIL THE ELECTION AND THEY'RE SAYING IT'S GOING TO BE STARMERGEDDON! IT'S ALMOST AS IF THE TORIES HAVE SOMEONE ON THE INSIDE WORKING AGAINST THEM!” Starminator: “HMM. YES. IMAGINE THAT, EH?” Rishi: “OBVIOUSLY I SHALL BE VERY DISAPPOINTED IF ANYONE PLACES A BET ON THE ELECTION DATE… YES, CRAIG, I CAN SUB YOU.” Angela: “BUT WITH A BIG MAJORITY, WE'LL BE ABLE TO SET ASIDE OUR CAUTION AND EMBRACE OUR TRUE SOCIALIST PRINCIPLES AGAIN!” Starminator:” OUR WHAT NOW?”
Since ex-MP Craig Williams has been charged with betting on the general election date, here’s my Starminator cartoon from that time referencing the story in passing…
“Scores of English councils could go bankrupt when hidden SEND debt reappears” - 2 stories in one paper on SEND deficits—lots of briefing by LAs going on, though some figures are wrong, SNJ's Matt says. Tania quoted in one www.theguardian.com/educatio...

Ther have been far too many stories recently blaming SEND for council deficits, when it’s just one element in their problems. The main problem is of course the chronic underfunding of local authorities by government for the last 15 years. It all feels like softening up for SEND cuts.

Something's got to give, and I would like to propose that it's our property tax system
Scrap stamp duty and council tax, introduce an annual tax proportionate to the home's value.

Comic by Stephen Collins for the Guardian. Script as follows: Scene is a British WOODLAND by a RIVER. A NATURALIST is stood next to a cage, and TV NEWS REPORTERS are filming him and the cage. 1 NATURALIST: And now It is my great honour 2 NATURALIST: to reintroduce the first wild beaver back into Britain 3 [Cut to the BEAVER’S CAGE. Its door is open and the Beaver is leaned nonchalantly up against the opening, smoking a cigarette.] 4 BEAVER: Well, well, well. 5 BEAVER: Look who's come crawling back. 6 BEAVER: Got a rubbish ecosystem have ya? 7 BEAVER: Not happy with the *critical anti-flood infrastructure* engineered by the flippin *badgers*? 8 BEAVER: I almost didn't recognise you without one of my ancestors on your head… 9 BEAVER: First you wipe us out… now you ask us to come back and build dams for free… You actually expect me to be *pleased* don’t ya? NATURALIST: I'm so sorry I…I… 10 BEAVER: “Ooh la la, the Brits have come crawling back…” Do I look like *Michel flippin’ Barnier*? 11 NATURALIST: I-if there’s some kind of… *remuneration* we could offer I-I’m sure… 12 BEAVER [throwing cigarette to the ground]: Unlimited pond weed, two tickets to Abba Voyage. NATURALIST: Done. [ends]

You want that lovely Tom Roberts art. Plus, it has words inside!
Once again for the love of god just put taxes up, you'll have to anyway before this parliament is out so do it now, cite defence as the reason, lean into the fact the world has changed & govt must too. (Me and @johnharris1969.bsky.social discussed this on the Guardian Politics Weekly pod btw..

Am I missing something... even if you accept the rhetoric about getting people back to work and avert your eyes from the cruelties that will doubtless result, why is the govt attacking the Personal Independence Payment? It's not an out-of-work benefit.
A photo of the front cover of issue 1644 of Private Eye magazine with the caption "on shelves now." The headline reads "KING AGREES TO HOST TRUMP VISIT". The cover features a photograph of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and King Charles III walking together. Speech bubbles add dialogue to the image: Starmer says, "Give him a welcome fit for a President," to which King Charles replies, "OK, I'll shout at him then boot him out."

Labour has a real counterattack opportunity if they’re brave enough to take it.
More spending, both for public services + defence, using the need to prep the UK for war to justify breaking fiscal rules/tax pledges.
Be unequivocal in calling those seeking to undermine the UK traitors and quislings.

In a move that will shock literally no-one who has been paying any attention, Donald Trump has yet again come up with an absurd, facile solution to an intractable geopolitical problem.
