Even the pre-streaming options (Netflix mail, DVR, video rentals) all involved some degree of planning & often coordinating with others for TV access.

Fun, and with relatively frictionless access. Even comparing current streaming Netflix to the amount of thought and planning needed to make the best use of Netflix by mail. And that's just in the last ~15 years!

To use the CD example, when you buy that CD you *own* it. You can play it on anything that's designed to play CDs, you can re-gift/sell, you can rip the files to listen to on a different device. Even if streaming is a "better deal" it's a completely different relationship with what you're paying for

I think you're really on to something here & hitching onto this last point is that so much more of what you pay for today is some combo of unnecessarily subscription based, or locked into a specific app ecosystem/DRM, or just digitally ephemeral so that it also feels like you're getting less.
