And rates have been stagnant for the better part of 20, 25 years maybe, so the amount of work you need to do to make a living is a vast magnitude larger than it used to be.

Also I feel it’s worth noting that even that wouldn’t be enough money to qualify for most apartments in the US now that everything seems to have a 3x monthly income requirement (let’s ignore the additional complications of freelance income here)

That’s a lot of work just to actually do, but to even *get* that many assignments in the first place (reliably and with compatible schedules) would be extremely difficult for most people

Like I really don’t think people appreciate how much work you need to find every year as a freelance TL to make anything resembling a livable wage with the rates where they are rn. To hit the median US income on pretty typical manga rates you’d have to get about *50 volumes* a year

Also 7S specifically could greatly improve efficiency just by actually providing the text to their translators instead of… having them buy it themselves. But nah something something AI

I’m p sure the easiest way to get media localized faster would be to raise rates for external contractors so they can dedicate more time to individual series and hire more people on the other end of the process (typesetters/etc for manga, programmers for games, etc) to reduce those bottlenecks

I think I found where the 6 months claim comes from, and it's not just for TL... but they are still completely misunderstanding the process and thinking we spend WAY more time TLing (8 weeks?!) and deciding terminology/etc (4 weeks?!) than we actually do. Do they actually talk to any translators?

The last three books about the Choctaw language & culture that I've bought have *ALL* turned out to be just AI-generated junk🤬

I'm pretty sure I've posted about this very dub on here before, but if you speak Japanese and have watched the original skit, it is indeed a much watch. It adds a handful of its own funny bits while doing an impressive job preserving the overall spirit. Whoever Konami hired to do this did great. 😌

Translations set global legacies for works and if you're not prepared to handle those ramifications, then stay away. If anyone on the team sees this, I sincerely urge you to rescind this patch and think deeply what you have done. This isn't a matter of ideology; it's about responsibility, period

It doesn't matter how truthful you might be about the process or how much human oversight there really was in the end. You owe it to both those devs and fellow translators fighting tooth and nail to keep our occupation alive to produce a translation that is completely human from start to finish.

I will not mince words: Segagaga is a deeply personal, human game about passionate developers making the best of a bad situation. This is not the first patch to employ MTPE as a shortcut, but it is particularly tone deaf to deploy in this climate for a game about the people who made Sega what it is.
