I had a very different experience in uni, very painful memories, glad I'm out of them. However to mirror your thoughts, the time I spent researching for my masters degree was the most fun I have ever had at uni. Research and learning was so fun. I had a full PhD scholarship but had to pick work.
I have given myself until the end of April to slack off and do nothing. I'm already excited about getting back into my own stuff .

I genuinely believe console companies should open up their deprecated consoles. imagine if sony put out a PSP SDK and gave you a firmware that you can just run unsigned code. Imagine if they did this for PS1 and PS2. and Eventually for PS3 and later. I actually wanna hear the arguments against this.

I don't know which market it will be fighting in, going against the Steam Deck is not very possible given the Steam Library.
Going against the Switch 2 is dangerous because people get the Switch 2 for the exclusives and IPs on it so if you don't have exclusives what will you have?
My best guess is that the API for it will closely match the PS5 and the generation after it. Easier porting. Much like the Steam Deck.
However why would anyone develop for the handheld exclusively when they can just make the console version if the APIs match?
With Sony console prices hitting the proverbial roof, I'm a bit scared I won't be able to afford the portal handheld when it comes out which means people's uptake of the device might be low causing Sony to to not invest in it again like the vita which will make me sad.

I have so far only worked on a few big AAA engines, almost all of them copy the textures they wanna use at the start of the frame before they begin drawing. I have yet to see someone do copies mid frame. I wonder why that is? age of the engine? some platforms not providing syncs for the problem? idk
