Wall of a church with faint outlines of a doom painting. The top register is Jesus with Mary and the Apostles alongside an angel blowing the trumpet for Judgement Day. The second register is dominated by scenes of different people rising from their coffins for judgement. At the right against a deep red background are outlines of the angel Michael holding weapons next to a faint outlines of a demon. At the bottom of this register appears another demon, a cauldron and what may be a wheelbarrow or cart. The left had register depicts saved souls being led away by another angel.
Closer picture of the hell scene above what is thought to depict scenes of Christ’s life in smaller box registers. The scenes are very difficult to make out.
Yesterday’s adventure was brought to by my incessant and tangential deep dives. To my knowledge, it’s the northernmost doom painting in England. It’s 14th century and way bigger than internet pictures would have you believe. St Mary and St Martin’s, Blyth, Notts - a mere 10-15 minute drive for me!
