an mspaint drawing of a black hole that is roughly inspired by the scientifically accurate black hold simulation in INTERSTELLAR (2014) of the fictional black hole gargantua. the key areas of concern begin with the photon ring which outlines the black hole shadow. the photon ring is the ring of light which is extremely close to the black hole and has likely travelled multiple times around it before reaching us that encapsulates the black hole shadow which is the area roughly twice the size of the event horizon that light does not escape from. the shadow is formed by gravitational lensing. curiously, the black hole shadow is also somehow a clock with the lower digits obscured slightly by the accretion disk spinning around the black hole. the accretion disk goes around, over, and below the black hole thanks to gravitational lensing which allows us to seen the far side, beneath it, and above it all at once. the left side is brighter due to doppler beaming based on the spin. really neat!!!
