Hey CBC: Seriously? Interrupting some of the most dramatic moments of the Olympic opening ceremonies with picture-in-picture commercials? NOT COOL.
#Clissold: Q: Do journalists shape or fashion their journalism to avoid the backlash of the administration? Short answer: NO. Can't.
#Clissold: CBC has teams dedicated to information verification. They work at verifying video (such as that coming from Iran) and authenticating facts. Simpson says she's extra cautious about using information. Sometimes can lean on CNN and Reuters for verification.
#Clissold: The next generation of journalists needs to understand the importance of this moment and the hard work that's going to be required. End of formal talk; start of Q&A.
#Clissold: The mid-term elections are coming. It'll be a temperature check. Americans will send a message. Predicting American voters is not advisable, as they're unpredictable. Will the president take the steps he's talked about regarding interference in the elections?
#Clissold: There's no way to know if the Greenland threat is really gone. I hope I'm wrong about the rising threats against Canada. What can we learn about Trump's statements? He's got a zero-sum world view. He must win.
#Clissold: Over the past year, Simpson has been able to ask one question in the White House briefing room. Canadians should brace for more threats and more insults, heading into the next six months, because of the approach of the renegotiation of CUSMA.
#Clissold: U.S. State Department is in the process of changing the rules around the presence of foreign journalists in the United States.
#Clissold: Some news orgs are banned from events; orgs that provide favourable coverage get more access. Trump admin has sent a clear message on that. Some news companies are averse to pushing back against the administration, as they have multiple business interests that need approval.
#Clissold: Challenge for journalists: It's a particularly dark time. Trump's attacks on journalists lead to online threats and attacks. Has the public simply become numb to the false information? Diversity is a good thing, but some media orgs operate on the premise that Trump's claims are true.
#Clissold: Defence of the Trump administration may not be the loudest, but Canadians need to be aware it exists. Trump now using his grievances about the "stolen" election of 2020 as basis for nationalising election. Polling shows that "not an insignificant amount" believe that claim.
#Clissold: Simpson just returned from Minneapolis. Saw a lot of fear and anger. However, also found support for the Trump administration. He did promise, Simpson says, to carry out the largest deportation in American history. Good and Pretti incidents are leading to erosion of trust.
#Clissold: "At times the news is too overwhelming... but I find, especially in Canada, that people can't look away." So much of the information we get right now is served up by social media, aimed at making money.
