I get the roguelike is efficient in terms of content:playtime ratio and that's the only real way indies are able to compete in scope but I wish "how many hours can this successfully consume before the user gets bored" was not a thing being optimized for or something you got critical praise for

i won't go quite as far as to claim it's equivalently unethical a model I'm not quite that insane yet but I do notice an uncomfortable parallel with how live-service games are also typically designed to consume huge amounts of time to point where it's kind of the only thing you're meant to play

i have not entirely positive feelings about the fact a lot of popular indie games lately are games with about 4-6 hours worth of actual content but spread across 40-60 hours of roguelike slot machine pulling.

i get why this happens I just wish "being the biggest time sink" was not so rewarding lol

my general internal barometer for "good or bad movie" is whether or not I catch myself seriously thinking about the run time at any point and the time flew by with that one.

i watched off a DVD so fortunately it wasn't quite that jarring but also, I did still notice lmfao

i'm a bit more mixed on the decision to shoot the entire fucking movie like that and I wasn't expecting the main antagonists to essentially be a group of incels? but I certainly found the movie exciting nevertheless. it's very gritty, sells the vibe really well.

I understand (now) it was done out of technical necessity because those genuinely excellent shots of a desolate London were not possible otherwise. As someone who lived in London for most of his life, those shots were unnerving. London is never ever like that. Very off, weirded me out. Great opener.

Watched 28 Days Later today.

I was hitherto unaware this movie was shot on a playstation 2 eyetoy camera and I absolutely spent the first 10 minutes thinking "is it supposed to look like this". I know it's ironic that I'm the ps1 game guy and yet this aspect of a movie threw me off so hard lmao

there's a reason game shows about social manipulation or games of intelligence, really anything with a more intimate focus on specific players and not people running obstacle courses, tend to dole out eliminations at regular, predictable intervals, it's convenient for a lot of reasons.

I don't think attempting to replicate the format of a battle royale gameshow is totally impossible (I think Takeshi's Castle and Wipeout more or less figured this out decades ago) but it needs a far more careful game designer and may require a minimum quantity of people falling into pools of water.

(sorry I'm still thinking about this) It seems to me that the biggest conceptual problem with Beast Games is that the team behind it seems to genuinely not appreciate how, because Squid Game is fiction, a story penned by a writer, it doesn't matter that the games are not balanced? it is a story.

He ran an illicit gambling website and was to sentenced to a year and a half in prison but appealed it to three years probation.

got arrested for embezzling money later on but never actually got charged with anything for that.

Sangmin is quite a uh, a character?

In a truly hysterical epilogue to The Genius, Sangmin would go onto to be arrested for fraud.

like I don't think Dan really examined that as hard as he could but Beast team seems to think you can throw ever escalating piles of cash at people as a means of heightening tension seemingly totally unaware that there is a ceiling for most people where the choice ceases to be real

3 days ago 29 1 4 0

you can see metrics brain seep in so bad from how often contestants are presented the opportunity to cash out nonsenscially huge sums of cash because to Jimmy "do you want a million now or maybe five million later" is a compelling decision while to most normal people, a million is already infinity.
