Australia finally acknowledges environment underpins all else. That’s no small thing | Ken Henry In what are dangerous times for democracies around the world, parliament’s overhaul of nature laws in the EPBC Act shows ambitious reform remains possible

Australia has recognised a fundamental truth: that *everything* depends on healthy wild ecosystems.

Time for the rest of the world to follow suit, and then ACT on it.

10 years ago, there was only a single 'leathceann' (windswept) birch tree in the foreground.

Now, there's a full-on exploding diverse native rainforest, none of which was planted. All it took was fencing out sheep.

Let's rewild the world 🌏

Race to the Bottom: Impact of Deep-Sea Fishing Severely Underestimated Scientists recalculated historical catch data to find that bottom trawlers that scrape the seafloor with huge nets may be killing far more fish – and destroying more habitats – than previously thought...

They concluded that deep-sea trawling – an especially lethal fishing technique that deploys industrial-scale gear at depths greater than 400m (1,300ft) – caught and killed nearly 80% more fish than experts had previously estimated.

Did Pride protect a predator?

'“If you look at PiS’s [Pride in n Surrey's] social media activity in 2019 and 2020, so much is focused on enticing children to take part,” one local lesbian says. “Stephen Ireland clearly set up PiS to get access to children.”'

@irishrainforest.bsky.social Dereliction is awful but 7 years ago my neighbour bought their house and never moved in and never rented it out. The whole urban back garden is now a forest and is home to hundreds of small birds. I’m constantly fighting it back but I love the noise the birds make.

Can the Greens survive Zack Polanski?

Internal purges, rural alienation, the rise of a new Corbynist party could leave the Greens weakened. Here's why this leadership contest matters more than you think.

Why give this uber-misogynist male the time of day?
After all:
'When a porn-obsessed writer can be lauded as a feminist prophet for describing the “barest essentials” of “femaleness” as “an open mouth, an expectant asshole, blank, blank eyes” we should wonder how on earth we got to this point.'

The Renewable Illusion: Why Fossil Fuels Keep Winning Global renewables hit records in 2024, but fossil fuel use still rises. Here’s why solar’s surge isn’t enough—and what the latest energy data really shows.

1. This is something I've been saying for 25 years, but it's hard to get many people to listen. What counts is not the new energy sources you add, but the old ones you retire. Unfortunately it's politically easier to build renewables than to shutter fossil fuels.🧵

Oh look Bluesky has finally arrived at the cheerleader for political violence status it has been chasing for so long. This is absolutely disgusting incitement of violence & it ought to have no place in public life. Shame on the account quoted below and its fans & shame on Bluesky for promoting it.

Blue whales are going eerily silent—and scientists say it’s a warning sign A six-year study off California’s coast shows how marine heat waves and noise pollution are silencing the ocean’s largest singers. Does saving the ocean start with hearing it?

A slow-burning environmental disaster: “As prey became scarce, blue whale vocalisations dropped by nearly 40% alongside a collapse in krill and anchovy populations.
‘It’s like trying to sing while you're starving,’ Ryan adds. ‘They were spending all their time just trying to find food.’”
