for all my issues i am pretty impressed in general by how well hobb blends all the disparate shaggy elements of her story into a pretty satisfying conclusion. 3/5 stars, ive rarely lived worse months of my life but i have read worse books.

i kept at it due to the sunk cost fallacy and bc for better or worse if a book has pacing issues but has a satisfying ending ill appreciate it more than, say, a book that is generally pleasant to read throughout but has a shitty ending. (words of someone negatively polarized by stephen king)

my friends’d say “if youre not enjoying it you could literally just quit” and i’d say nooo, you don’t get it, everything else aside, it could be argued that suffering is a virtue in and of itself. weirdly enough, that kind of ended up being the message of ass quest (my loving nickname for the book.)

it took me so long partly because i was going through various Problems, both personal and political, but also tbh in all 3 of the books in this trilogy ive had issues with Hobb’s pacing and in this, the longest of them all, the pacing was absolutely the biggest stumbling block i had.

god. spent 3 of the most difficult months of my life reading this. i almost gave up but like fitz i perservered and succeeded (?) tho i begin to question if the goal itself was even worth it and also im kind of a shell of the person i once was. (kidding) (but only kinda)

esp when i worked at t*rget and id forget to pack a lunch, the sushi was def the least bad of the various mediocre options lmao.
