Tipperary council seeks new law to compel walkers, cyclists, e-scooter users to don hi-vis Tipperary County Council's elected members have unanimously passed a motion to request the Minister for Transport to make it mandatory for these road users to wear hi-vis jackets or vests in the inter...

Who’s going to tell these councillors that the moment they step out of their cars, they’re pedestrians too? By their own logic, they’d need to be in hi-vis at all times.

Rather than tackling dangerous driving or poor road design, the responsibility gets dumped on the most vulnerable people instead.

Collins is trying to make out that international protection applicants are competing with Irish people for housing. This is not just not true, it's disinformation. A shameful racist lie.

We might be well used to statistical partition in maps like this but it's all the more striking given that there was a census conducted in 1926 in the North but it has been "lost". Simultaneous censuses underlines ofc how these were as much about constituting the state as representing its population

I have GONE WILD on the 1926 Irish census and have made some fun discoveries:

Trinidadian medical students, a Baháʼí couple in Donegal, the Irish widow of an emigré Cossack, and Egyptian sailors in Cork city - among many others.

This will lead you to Matsuyo Hanakawa, a 22 year old woman from Nagasaki Japan who was living in Malahide. Perhaps the only Buddhist in the Census - but maybe others have found more?

There's always a flood of these articles/posts after each revelation of men's systemic sexual violence. A rape academy was revealed so now we have to be subjected to a bunch of inane "but actually women" reactions, a further indignity in our rape culture that centers the comforts of men.

A screengrab from a 1926 census return with the head of household's signature.

I'm sure like most others I am obsessed with digging into the #1926census today. A particular thing I love seeing is the head of household's signature. It makes family members across time feel closer somehow.

Eileen Ní Fhloinn expressed how far right use of the tricolour has created a sense of fear around what is supposed to be a unifying symbol, in response to which she is now being bombarded with hateful remarks by thousands of people, incited by Gript and various far right social media outfits

Guy who addressed the 'fuel protest' in Cork city - which had a weird amount of anti-vaccine signs for a fuel protest - is currently awaiting a trial date for harassing a Garda.

It's also bad news for researchers.

Govt seeking energy tax derogation to tackle fuel crisis The Irish Government is looking for a range of flexibilities under EU law in order to help tackle the fuel crisis, RTÉ News understands.

The fall-out from this sh1te will be ongoing. We'll be paying billions in fines for emissions down the road. Insane that this clusterfuk was allowed to happen.

But of course this is just one of the effects of continually kicking the can, and not tackling the core issues

"militant action has won concessions" could as easily be said about burning down IPAS Centres. I have a lot of time for Paul but this is hopelessly naive

Opposition leader Péter Magyar at a rally.

Orbán's electoral crushing is a far greater achievement than most people outside Hungary realise.

He systemically consolidated power for 16 years, fixed the electoral map, abused govt power for political purposes & censored media.

The hurdles that Hungarians overcame for this moment were immense.

As well as @thejournal.ie undertaking some of the best reporting on the protests, it is striking how gendered it all is.

IMHO this is an example of a certain strand of leftism that adheres so rigidly to an abstract principle that it can’t abandon it even when the facts of a situation indicate that a different position should be taken

You may feel powerless to respond to hate but you are not.

One small thing you can do, which will make a real difference, is donate to the Muslim Sisters of Éire.

I just did it, and it only takes a moment.

These incredible women show up day after day to feed unhoused people.

Utterly depressing political moment in Ireland as a lot of people obviously do seem to believe their interests are at one with those of haulage companies blocking the country’s only fuel refinery, where the electorally unsuccessful hard right feels empowered by it and even left feels has to pander

Cannot help but feel agrieved at this tbh, the govt refused to give people with disabilities a €400 emergency payment, even prior to attacks on Iran, where disabled persons groups outlined disabled ppl were choosing between heating and eating. #Spéirgorm #speirgorm

We’re just going to bung them some money to subsidise a business profit margin.

Which, were it applied to people personally under pressure also might be defensible.

But that seems not to be the plan.

Fire and ambulance services to be curtailed due to fuel shortages caused by protests Meanwhile, Micheál Martin has said Ireland may is on the precipice of “turning oil away” because of the blockades.

Why, why is the government allowing this to happen? Last year they arrested and terrorized people who held a Gaza protest outside Leinster House. But now nothing.
