As someone in ocean and coastal conservation I never thought fire would be a big part of our work, but here we are. The fire in Pacific Palisades has a lot in common with the Lahaina fire. Both burned to the ocean and are absolutely devastating.

Narratives take over quickly in a disaster. Yes, wealthy and powerful people are losing their homes. Pacific Palisades also has a large mobile home park, and undoubtedly other lower cost housing.

Wildfires are raging across Los Angeles.
The largest is in Pacific Palisades, which has grown to over 17,000 acres as of Thursday morning and forced hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate.
Firefighters say they are stretched to capacity as they battle to contain the wildfires around Los Angeles, which are burning a ring of flames around some of the area’s most iconic neighborhoods.

Look at this devastation of the beautiful Pacific Palisades. I am in the next town over, outside the evacuation boundary, but not by that much. I have a packed suitcase, the wind gusts are not as high as they were, and I am vigilant. I feel so sad for so many.
When you hear about wildfires, most people associate them with places that are remote or rural, mountain towns, that kind of thing. The Pacific Palisades and Eaton fires are nothing like that …..

Water is becoming a major issue in the Southern California fires.
As crews battled the wildfire in Pacific Palisades, they put so much strain on the water system that the fire hydrants ran dry.
The fires have also fed ash into the water supply, leading to a boil order notice.
BREAKING: State Farm, one of the biggest insurers in California, canceled hundreds of homeowners' policies last summer in Pacific Palisades—the same area which is now being ravaged by a devastating wildfire, per Newsweek.
