People can’t afford groceries. They can’t afford bills. People are living out of their cars. We have people working full-time here and then picking up part-time jobs elsewhere just to make ends meet.”

Today, more than 2,200 long-term care workers from 24 care homes across the province take to the picket line. Nova Scotia’s long-term care workers are the lowest paid in Atlantic Canada, and do not make a living wage.

This! Understanding marginal tax rates—

When the government says that tax cut will put an average of $1,400 in your pocket. (Nova Scotia)
Or how adjusting brackets for inflation helps everyone the same?
NM all the tax breaks that the highest income also get -the Effective tax rate which is lower.

Sometimes it is because we don’t have a choice, and we have the means to afford a private for profit service. Then the question isn’t rather than do that, it is incumbent on us to also work to make the public system better. We can’t just criticize. Many people cannot choose to opt out or to pay.

Ask yourself:
« How often have I focused my energy on using my time and resources to insulate myself from the many fucked up public systems in America, rather than thinking about how to make them better? »

« The theory of "a rising tide lifts all boats" does
not work when you allow the people with the most influence to buy their way out of the water. »
Why universal public systems are imp. Think of this as we pushback privatization in Cdn health care, & accept it in child care & long term care.

Despite minimum wage increases in Atlantic Canada generally keeping pace with general inflation, they fall short of covering the rising cost of key essentials.

All workers deserve a fair, living wage and decent working conditions.

Farewell to one of Canada’s greatest social justice champions Stephen Lewis was a movement leader, a brilliant orator, one of Canada's most consequential UN ambassadors and a driver of change for HIV/AIDS patients.

We have lost a giant, and a hero to countless social justice activists across Canada and around the world.

I also had to listen to the Minister of Public Works share in detail about his fun ride along on a plow. Those plow drivers are definitely paid more than those long term care workers. I don’t begrudge them. I begrudge the undervaluing of care work.

$18.77 an hour and the offer on the table would bring them just above $21 an hour by the end of the proposed contract. In some cases, workers make almost $10 an hour less than their counterparts in the rest of Atlantic Canada

Sitting in the leg listening to the Minister of long term care speak for 30 mins never truly acknowledge the full workforce. While citing my math to brag(?) about how much unpaid caregivers would contribute in GDP if they were paid and thus how much gov saves on their backs and those underpaid.

As a mom whose son is training to be a pilot, I cannot even read the details. This captures what we need to understand. Systems failures all around. Angering.

I loved meeting so many Nova Scotians yesterday —outside of social media. Getting to hang with Save Our Old Forests Nina was a highlight. The coalitions that are being built and the learnings being shared truly give me hope. Community building real connections.

Yesterday was a wonderful feeling of community building. The turnout at the Many vs the Money townhall was way beyond expectations. A full house. A space that will now be offered free to be used for monthly gatherings to continue to share ideas and strategize for the province we want to live in.

First time I have been out past midnight in a while. Headed out to first join the rally for librarians who are at risk of losing their funding in schools in Halifax. Incredibly moving testimonials from current and former students. Listening to librarians describe their expertise and the safe space.

N.S. budget bill vote shut down by singing protesters | CBC News As the final vote to approve Premier Tim Houston's controversial budget was about to begin, members of the crowd in the Province House gallery broke out in song.

We sang.
“It's OK to change your mind, show us your courage, leave this behind,"

"It's OK to change your mind. And you can join us — join us at any time."

Result: The vote on third reading of Appropriations was delayed.

Real result: community building

Thanks Terri! This live bluekskying was super helpful. Usually there is a full agenda with a list of presenters, and the written submissions available online, but I don't see either.

"The arts are not a luxury good. They are a fundamental asset to any city or community," writes Sébastien Labelle.

"The arts should not be treated as just an expense, but rather as an investment that yields strong returns, and can actually help fight a budgetary deficit."
