David Wilkie's son chasing his iconic world record time from 1976 Montreal Olympics Adam Wilkie, a marketing manager and the son of Olympic swimming champion David, is chasing his father's world record time in his memory.

This sounds like an amazing challenge which highlight swimming sites and communities.

Hopefully we see Adam at some iconic outdoor pools as he pursues his father David's world record. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/swimmi...

This new issue includes a feature on the revitalisation of Plymouth’s magnificent Tinside Lido. This has brought out the Art Deco beauty of the pool and building, introduced great new facilities for visitors and the community, and, best of all, deeply involved the city’s young people. 🩵

Jesus Green Lido is one of Europe's longest outdoor swimming pools and five years ago it was being filled with water for the new season. It took nearly a whole week for it to fill.

The lost north London lido that's now a garden centre The Bounds Green lido was built in the 1930s but closed in 1988 and is now the Sunshine Garden Centre.

On a top 10 of really hard to understand things that previous generations did, demolishing the lidos is up there with ripping out fireplaces to put in three bar electric heaters. This one would have been five minutes' walk from my house.

A brief history of British lidos – and new hope for their return to glory The boom of lido construction in the 20th century was part of the post war public works programme, which aimed to create jobs and promote health.

Back in 2023 I wrote about the opportunity presented by outdoor pools as part of the UK leisure estate.

Distinctive places across the country which are much loved. theconversation.com/a-brief-hist...

Floating park, lido and housing proposed for Victoria Dock West Early proposals include a focus on swimming, alongside a wellness centre with a sauna and spa.

The transformation of Royal Victoria Dock West will create one of the city’s most exciting new public spaces.

Cleaning up the waterway is a major opportunity for Newham, and for Londoners’ access to blue spaces.

It's a vibrant community site of joy which is bound to get plenty of support! www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/2579704...

Looking forward to hosting the Xmas @future-lidos.bsky.social monthly online gathering tomorrow. Significant progress as schemes appear and progress. Much more work and support needed to accelerate and meet the public demand for healthy, accessible, joyous community spaces. Lets get them built!

Thanks to Swim England for a wonderful Dip at the Docks alongside the Labour Conference in Liverpool today. It was great to meet MPs Katie White and Simon Opher - both passionate supporters of their local lidos and of #LidosForAll.

The great British lido revival Once at the heart of their communities, many UK lidos fell into decline in the late 20th century. Now they’re making a comeback as valuable community assets

In contrast to yesterday’s sad post about Ramsgate’s lost lido, here’s a great feature just out in the RICS journal, Modus, celebrating the great British lido revival -

This is why Future Lidos exists - to help prevent this happening and bring more heritage lidos back into community use.

Ramsgate Lido then and now - look and weep. And fight for your local lido. ✊

The lido there is also fantastic - beautiful art deco design, and full of bikes outside.

Imagine pottering here on a cycle and swimming whenever you want. It was also super easy to book - you could just book at the time you wanted to go. … 6/13

Happy Rebirthday(s) to Beccles and Chipping Norton lidos! 15 and 21 years ago respectively, these precious community assets in small towns were taken into community ownership. They've both gone from strength to strength since, and we wish them many, many happy returns! 🎂🥳🎉
