I noticed that, and had the same thought. Younger folks probably don't see how issues like loss of libraries, and loss of research think of them as abstract concepts that won't affect them until some far off future. They have no concept of what it took to build the systems they take for granted.
Maybe they were referring to pawn shops, which traditionally have a trio of balls. You can dance and pawn your heirlooms in one convenient location!

The thing that kills me is you don't need a time machine to understand this. My buddy is in his 80s and grew up on Iowa. He point blank said as a kid sometimes other kids just died. That was his childhood.
