14 yrs ago I prepped for my 1st trip to Yanomami territory—no clue what to pack, didn’t speak Spanish, scared of bugs. Got the worst sunburn of my life. But I felt adventure in my bones.

Still do. Older now, but that spark never left 🌿

I received a heartbreaking email today: A paper in a special issue I’m editing is being retracted because one of its authors is afraid of losing their job and their legal status in the U.S. if they publish a scientific study on evolution. Yes, on evolution, nature's engine of diversity.

Meticulously crafted from palm wood, great cane, monkey bone or bamboo, and plant fibers, the bow and arrow tool is vital for hunting, defense, and survival. I was in awe of its simple yet powerful design.

In 2023, I had the privilege of participating in the Kurikama Yanomami Assembly, a gathering of 20+ communities uniting for their rights, education, and healthcare. These assemblies reflect the evolution of Yanomami society as they navigate their global role.

Modulating the developing gut microbiota with 2’-fucosyllactose and pooled human milk oligosaccharides - Microbiome Background Synthetic human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are used to supplement infant formula despite limited understanding of their impact on the post-weaned developing gut microbiota. Just out! Results of an incredible effort 👏 by @simonerenwick.bsky.social to demonstrate how different gut microbes and #gutmicrobiomes respond to human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). Many more microbes respond to HMOs than you might think! Give it a read… links.springernature.com/f/a/DF0RtJaQ...

I'm an American living in Canada. I met two new people today and they asked where I was from. I said Pennsylvania. There was a very long and awkward silence. I slowly said, " I, uh....do not support the tariffs" and everyone let out a sigh of relief and laughed. 😅

🔬 Meet Simone Renwick, PhD 🌟 Postdoc at UCSD’s LRF MOMI CORE, explores how human milk components like HMOs and microbes shape infant gut microbiota. Her work combines advanced techniques to uncover milk’s role in infant health and development. 🌱

Yanomami sees success two years into Amazon miner evictions, but fears remain Once estimated as 20,000 in the territory, hundreds of illegal miners still remain and may expand business at the slightest sign of the security forces withdrawing.

Mercury contaminating the lands for 100 years. And when the next destructive administration takes over in 20 years, and does 100 more years damage? The Yanomami people need resources (funds, education, technology) to not only fight back, but always defend.
