Deep-sea wildernesses are more important than the promise of seafloor mining (analysis) When I set sail on the MV NorSky in the summer of 2008 to probe the depths of Manus Basin off the coast of Papua New Guinea, I believed in the promise of deep-sea mining. As an early-career deep-sea e...

If you haven’t heard about it yet, the youths are super into IRL human interactions, no AI, and “physical media” (vinyl! DVDs! tapes!) right now and it’s glorious.

Like there are 20yo influencers that just read old paper books and talk about feelings.

Every year since 1994 crime has gone down and every year Americans think it is worse than last year which explains why rural MAGA grandmas think their favorite grandchild will be murdered if she moves to the city.

The President of the United States is threatening to commit war crimes and wipe out a "whole civilization" — all because he started a disastrous war of his own making and had no plan and no strategy for how to end it.

This is abhorrent, and the American people do not support this.

These are the Twitter/X accounts with the most engagement so far in 2026. I suppose I had some intuition for how bad it was, but jeez, this is what you get when the ecosystem is broken.

A Roman mosaic, executed in a naïve style. Beneath is either a rabbit or a hare. above is what may be intended to be a dog but the frankly shocking quality of the mosaic means it could be mistaken for an aardvark or anteater.

The terrorists that attacked Iran have just bombed one of the most elite scientific institutions in the Middle East, Iran’s Sharif University of Technology in the heart of Tehran. Not a military target, they are repeatedly going after schools and medical facilities just like in Palestine.

In New England, Catching Climate Data Along With Fish

Lobster fishermen are using sensors on their traps to collect temperature, dissolved oxygen, and soon salinity data on the changing ocean environment. These data are valuable to scientists studying climate change and help fishermen make informed decisions about where to fish.

Sea pig • MBARI Sea pigs are sea cucumbers that snuffle across the seafloor to find tasty morsels in the mud.

The 12yo has declared it Sea Pig Awareness Day!

Scotoplanes spp. are rotund, pinkish sea cucumbers who apparently “snuffle across the seafloor to find tasty morsels in the mud” and give taxi rides to king crabs for mysterious reasons.

This is my favorite climate change chart. Japanese monks, aristocrats, and emperors kept meticulous records of cherry blossom festivals for 1,200 years and accidentally built the world's longest climate dataset.

When Marc Lawrence was working on the 2000 film Miss Congeniality and was not pleased with his options for the Miss United States pageant theme song, he turned to Clyde. At only age five, Clyde wrote his own version, and the film's other producers chose to add it to the film without knowing its writer. The Miss United States pageant anthem which Clyde composed is prominently featured in the film, and his composition led him to become the youngest member of the Songwriters Guild of America.

Something fun I just learned: The screenwriter for Miss Congeniality didn't like the original music they had for the pageant anthem, so he asked his 5 year old son to write a new one. The producers unknowingly chose it for the film.

Trump's VA killed a home loan program. Vets are now losing their homes because of it Foreclosures on VA loans are at their highest level in a decade. VA has a fix but it is months away and could still leave vets worse off than most other homeowners.

Your federal government on Trumpism:

"More than 10,000 veterans lost their homes to foreclosure since May 2025, when the Trump administration shut down a key safety net in the VA home loan program...

"Another 90,000 vets are heading toward foreclosure..."
