A picture of the Earth from space illuminated by the full Moon – it looks like daylight, but this is the night side of the planet, not the day side. There are city lights on the continents and a green aurora towards the north and south poles, plus a faint rim of upper atmosphere airglow as well. You can also see a faint dark rim of the Artemis II window frame and the zodiacal light (probably). North is at lower-left and you can see North Africa, then Spain and Portugal on that side. You can see South America and North America on the right side.

You'll have seen this – Earth from #Artemis II en-route to the Moon.

But look again – it's Earth's *nightside*, lit by the near-full Moon, not the Sun 🌕️

The aurorae, airglow, stars, & city lights in Europe, Africa, & the Americas give the game away.

Cool.

This is my favorite climate change chart. Japanese monks, aristocrats, and emperors kept meticulous records of cherry blossom festivals for 1,200 years and accidentally built the world's longest climate dataset.

Weird ‘Little Red Dots’ in space are something we’ve never seen Astronomers are racing to understand mysterious ancient objects that pepper James Webb Space Telescope images

JWST has once again discovered the oldest galaxy ever observed, 280M years after the Big Bang.

It cost $10B to revolutionize physics. ICE currently gets $30B a year.

At 5.15pm GMT today, the Earth will be at perihelion, the closest point to the Sun in our annual round.

This should be the start of the year. Happy new orbit, everyone!

European Space Agency hit again as cybercrims claim 200 GB data up for sale As in past incidents, ESA says the impact was limited to external systems The European Space Agency has suffered yet another security incident and, in keeping with past practice, says the impact is limited. Meanwhile, miscreants boast that they've made off with a trove of data, including what they claim are confidential documents, credentials, and source code.…

This image shows an X-ray view of interstellar comet 3I ATLAS, captured by ESA’s XMM-Newton spacecraft. At the centre of the image, a bright red spot stands out against a dark background, like a fiery beacon. Starting from this core, faint gradients of purple and blue spread outward, creating a slightly rotated rectangular frame, divided by a thin horizontal line. The red colour shows low-energy X-rays, blue marks empty space with very few X-rays. A yellow arrow labelled “Sun” points left, indicating the comet’s orientation in the Solar System. At the bottom right, a scale marker reads “5 arcmin”, providing a sense of spatial dimension.]

Our XMM-Newton has observed comet 3I/ATLAS in X-ray light!

When gas molecules streaming from a comet collide with the solar wind they produce X-rays, seen here as the red glow of 3I/ATLAS 👉 www.esa.int/ESA_Multimed...

X-ray image of the comet captured by the soft X-ray imaging telescope Xtend. The image is created from quick-look processed data. The Xtend field of view covers a region of about 3 million km2, revealing a faint emission structure extending about 400,000 km around the comet. (Credit: JAXA)

The XRISM satellite has detected the x-ray glow of Comet 3I/ATLAS. This is the first time anyone has managed to obseve x-ray emission from an interstellar comet!

(FYI: X-rays result from the comet interacting with the solar wind. No spaceships required.) 🔭🧪

A large cargo ship named VAARWEL, painted in blue and white, is sailing through a canal. The ship has a flag at its front and is passing under an open drawbridge in the background. The canal is lined with trees on both sides, and the sky above is bright blue with scattered white clouds. A few people are visible on the bridge and near the water’s edge. In the foreground, at the bottom right, a small boat with a single person inside floats near the ship.

Welcome, Plato! 🤗

On 1 September, the spacecraft arrived in the Netherlands by boat from Germany via the Rhine River.

In the coming weeks, engineers will add the sunshield & solar arrays and carry out tests to confirm Plato is ready for launch 🚀

Python: The Documentary | An origin story YouTube video by CultRepo (formerly Honeypot)

Highly recommend watching this very interesting documentary. I've been a python advocate since 2003 when I first tried using it in astronomy data analysis: It was still very immature at that time, no astropy (but there was PyIRAF!) but it was fun and away from IDL

After seven years, very happy to see my book about Herschel (the telescope) finally published. I did describe the big discoveries made with the telescope, but what I really wanted to was capture the crazy stories behind the discoveries. This is not the sanitised version of astromy. #popularastronomy

With a manual installation of the Broadcom firmware it finally worked and I have a fully working MacBookPro Intel, late-2008 with LinuxMint-XFCE.

yes, I'm trying with XFCE version, all good for now (using LAN during the installation), but I couldn't make the Broadcom wireless driver to work, installed the proprietary driver, no luck, tried some other solutions found on the web, no luck... so, it's a no go for now.

At the centre of the image is a comet that appears as a teardrop-shaped bluish cocoon of dust coming off the comet’s solid, icy nucleus and seen against a black background. The comet appears to be heading to the bottom left corner of the image. About a dozen short, light blue diagonal streaks are seen scattered across the image, which are from background stars that appeared to move during the exposure because the telescope was tracking the moving comet.

In the photo three people in white overalls and caps stand in front of the instrumentation in a white hall. The equipment, about twice as tall as the people in the picture, consists of a black four-stepped-platform that supports 24 cameras. These resemble cylinders flaring at the top, not unlike big ice-cream cones. Each cylinder is wrapped in black material; the top flare has a metallic finish and a white lid.

To search for Earth-like planets our Plato mission will use 26 cameras in a design inspired by the compound eyes of insects.

The mission will spot any slight dimming or brightening of a star when a planet passes in front of it.

I suspect that fact that the vast majority of LLM users don’t seem to have received this (really very simple!) message is because the AI companies have a vested interest in us not understanding it. “ChatGPT is smart, it just makes mistakes sometimes” is much more marketable than the truth.
