Why are these vacant/abandoned building fees so low? A few hundred dollars is not going to incentivize them to resume construction.

Not just more than the first. Probably more computer power than a space shuttle had.

That's more or less why countries like Germany had mandatory military service until recently. The goal is to avoid the military only consisting of the poorest members of society.
It is the least bad thing in that list IMHO.

I mean Hungary does have a transition period too. Orbán is still prime minister until the parliament elects a new one (probably in May).

To be fair, he's not blaming Biden. He's saying the prices were lower than under Biden before the war (barely true) and that is why the increase is now so significant (definitely not true).

Ethnonationalism is still strong in Europe, and there have always been efforts (e.g., by Russia) to boost Euroskeptic voices.
It is just so sad for me to see that the US government is doing it, or that Elon Mask endorsed the fascist party in German.

They’re actively trying to weaken the European Union. It’s so obvious.

$500k of the gains are tax-free anyway because it is their primary residence. And it is also always an option to rent a smaller place and rent out your current one.

Imagine a European leader coming to California and attacking the federal government, like JD Vance just attacked "EU bureaucrats" in Hungary.

The world not screeching to a halt when the US killed more than 100 little school girls on the very first day of this "liberating war" led us exactly to this moment

(I also agree, by the way, that they should just fund and build the whole thing at once)

The worry is more about maintaining the tracks for at least 10–15 years from when the IOS opens, until Phase 1 is complete.
It seems like they want to make sure the IOS does not lose money, which would give opponents a reason to shut down the project.

I agree that they should run more trains, once it connects to Gilroy or Palmdale. Before that, I am doubtful the line will see a ton of ridership, but I hope I am wrong.

This is just the initial segment though, which will cost far less than $100bn.
As long as the guideway exists to support at least two tracks later, I do not see why they need to lay 100s of miles of additional track if only 1–2 trains an hour are running.

If inflation stays unchanged, prices still grow (unless inflation is ≤0%, but that hasn't happened in decades)

Next year San Francisco will most likely repave Mission St with the same configuration: a continuous bus lane only in one direction and plenty of interference with parking cars.
Our neighborhood deserves proper bus rapid transit, and the city a reliable north-south connection.

Here you can see the lane but it’s used by a Mercedes that the bus needs to overtake 😬

I promise there’s a bus lane here…

People who buy inefficient vehicles like this should have no right to complain about gas prices

I am amazed he's facing real consequences.

Same for the Mission, unfortunately.

Chinatown is one of the densest parts of the city and has virtually no bike infrastructure, and the sidewalks are often too narrow.

One Person Killed, Another Seriously Injured By Driver Who Crashed Into Building In SF’s Chinatown A 76-year-old driver allegedly jumped the curb while parking and smashed into a building in SF’s Chinatown Friday, striking two people, one of whom may have been a construction worker. One person died...

It's getting to where this is a daily Bay Area occurrence.

Once again, a senior citizen driver, this time in San Francisco, has jumped the curb while parking and killed a pedestrian.

We badly need better mobility alternatives for our elderly neighbors.

There's also much stricter enforcement. I would be very surprised if the BMW driver actually gets charged with a felony.

It's not so bad in Germany, but I also never met a decent BMW driver in the US...

Simply working in another state or being on vacation are not valid reasons to vote by mail under SAVE act, right?
