A positive mathematical disposition fosters a growth mindset, encouraging students to approach challenges with curiosity and resilience rather than fear. It's about cultivating a love for exploration and problem-solving in the world of numbers and patterns. -

The title of T.J.‘s session “Rooted in understand: from number paths to number lines for young learners”
Rhythms 1 sign
Come join me in Rhythms I to learn about Number Paths to Number Lines! #NCTMNOLA26 #NumberPaths #NumberLines
You're welcome!
Hopefully they are helpful to folks.
If you've seen them before they've been updated- MORE strings stuff now.
#ElemMathChat
Stay tuned for MORE info about them coming... soon!????

We will explore storytelling as a powerful way to share math, featuring wonderful mathy picture books that bring ideas to life. #ElemMathChat
Thanks for having me tonight! I hope these are helpful to folks!
#ElemMathChat
Yeah, better and FASTER is what I have noticed lately. Just crazy how quickly it's improving.
#ElemMathChat
hmmm, who can we call out about that???
#ElemMathChat
A9 I think the big idea here is... there are SO MANY resources (and not enough at the same time) I see AI as the panacea to "Here's what my kids did today (with this string) what string should I do next to get them to see/do _______?????
#ElemMathChat
Partly I asked this question because this will (hopefully) be the premise of (one) of our new books (with @drnickinewton.bsky.social ) and also because I'm still learning how to use AI myself!
I use mostly Chat GTP and Claude (Chat GTP is better for images!).
#ElemMathChat
Exactly! And then they are 'bleeding' into your math time which is GRADE LEVEL standard time (where Number Sense Routines may be getting at previous grade level standards.
#ElemMathChat
Yes, wish there were more!
Please @fawnnguyen.substack.com !

When doing the 1st 2 Irecord student thinking and come upon agreement of the answer. Then I would erase everything and write up the next equation/expression.
With the last one- I need to KEEP the previous parts of the string and the answer there so students can USE IT (the relationship part!)
Yes, for sure- take the Ss lead!
⭐A couple things⭐
1) the 1st 2 it's ok if you don't get to all the parts of the string (only 'more of the same') but the LAST one- in order to land the plane you have to get there (budgeting time, extending or going to a second day)
2) How I record
#ElemMathChat
I LOVE these- AND there are not enough of them available. I created the first string using the Math Learning Center "Number Frames App" and the others I pulled individual pictures that I used to create strings from some of the Number Talk Images sites (shared soon!)
#ElemMathChat
YES! 100%
#ElemMathChat
This is REALLY important because AGAIN the NT book (or the trainings I used to do at Math Solutions) did not explicitly help teachers understand how to treat these types of strings differently...
#ElemMathChat
Yes, absolutely- we want ALL of that to come out- but that RELATIONSHIP between the 2 and 4 and 8 and how it impacts the product is the MAJOR thing we want Ss to notice.
#ElemMathChat
A5 These are "Strategy Strings" they are intended to elicit a particular strategy from Ss. I can tell you from experience that MANY students will not see or use those strategies though- so be prepared to prompt/question them to be able to see it... sometimes u need to plant a seed
#ElemMathChat
Here's another example of this TYPE of string
Yes! But try to broaden that... this one in particular is looking for students to make 10's but what is that?
What would a GLOBAL title be for this type of String?
#ElemMathChat
I always like to ask... "What is this string BEGGING students to see and do?"
#ElemMathChat
Absolutely- the key is doing what your STUDENTS need...
#ElemMathChat
A4 Notice that they are all the SAME QUANTITY... we call these NUMBER STRINGS (strings where you are looking at the SAME quantity in multiple ways or different quantites and looking for the groups in them.
These are all about FLEXIBILITY!
#ElemMathChat
Yup, one of the problems with the name "Number Talks" and why @drnickinewton.bsky.social and I have moved away from it.
Strings can also be done where students are writing- but it's NOT a Math Strategy Talk then... but that's fine.
#ElemMathChat
A3 Even though implied- the`10 NT book was not explicit in stating they MUST be done with a string. SO, Math Strategy Talks (MST) R ALWAYS done with a string!
⭐Mental Math
⭐Student Ideas/strategies
⭐Teacher is facilitator/Recorder
⭐Routine (3-5 times a wk)
⭐Brief (10-15 min)
⭐Fun

Number Talks began way back in the 1980's and 90's... unfortunately the folks who did the work were not acknowledged (appropriately) in the 2010 Number Talk Book.
Original Number Talks would / could be just one equation with a great conversation whereas post 2010 Number Talks were done with Strings
