Governor Mills’ Statement on Notice of Investigation From U.S. Department of Education
February 21, 2025

Washington, D.C. – Governor Janet Mills released the following statement today in response to the U.S. Department of Education notifying the Maine Department of Education that it has been directed to initiate an investigation into the State of Maine over alleged Title IX violations:

“I have spent my career – as a District Attorney, as Attorney General, & now as Governor – standing up for the rule of law in Maine & America. To me, that is fundamentally what is at stake here: the rule of law in our country.

“No President – Republican or Democrat – can withhold Federal funding authorized & appropriated by Congress & paid for by Maine taxpayers in an attempt to coerce someone into compliance w/ his will. It is a violation of our Constitution & of our laws, which I took an oath to uphold.

“Maine may be one of the first states to undergo an investigation by his Administration, but we won’t be the last. Today, the President of the United States has targeted one particular group on one particular issue which Maine law has addressed. But you must ask yourself: who & what will he target next, & what will he do? Will it be you? Will it be because of your race or your religion? Will it be because you look different or think differently? Where does it end? In America, the President is neither a King nor a dictator, as much as this one tries to act like it – & it is the rule of law that prevents him from being so.

“I imagine that the outcome of this politically directed investigation is all but predetermined. My Administration will begin work w/ the Attorney General to defend the interests of Maine people in the court of law. But do not be misled: this is not just about who can compete on the athletic field, this is about whether a President can force compliance w/ his will, w/o regard for the rule of law that governs our nation. I believe he cannot.”

Governor Janet Mills of Maine should be a model to every Democratic governor and lawmaker out there, right now.

ICYMI — Q: "You called Zelenskyy a dictator. Would you use the same words regarding Putin?"

TRUMP: "I don't use those words lightly."

DOGE Mismanagement Principles Musk et al. don't know or care about the damage they are doing

DOGE is not a govt efficiency project. Firing 1 in 4 fed employees would cut govt spending by 1%. DOGE is a political control project. Firing and terrorizing public employees is a means to weakening state regulation & strengthening a personalist presidency donmoynihan.substack.com/p/doge-misma...

Ever think about how most all the big political actors and dictators of the 20th century personally experienced the horrors of war and bloodshed?

Meanwhile, we’re watching a U.S. coup carried out by men who have lived lives softer than that of your average inbred French Bulldog in a sweater.

Thanks! Let me know if you find any cool glaze combos. I'm just trying random stuff and doing a terrible job maintaining my pottery lab notebook.

I've been trying to be a more "not just work" person lately, so I've been diving into craftery.

Turns out, I have a bit of an aptitude for stained glass and pottery.

Also pictured are some of my awful blown glass creations. Not picture are numerous dead bonsai.

I feel like I'm preaching to the choir, but science funding in the US is very much on the ballot.

Trump proposed massive cuts to science infrastructure in every budget he submitted, including complete elimination or defunding of agencies.

I used a combination of specs grading and ungrading in my course. The students requested the big assignments to be specs graded, whereas the smaller/formative ones were ungraded. All were nestled within bundles.

For students from systematically marginalized groups, meritocracy messaging sits less easily. Because the only way to buy into it is to believe that they are smarter and harder working than their families and their friends back home. 5/

Of course I can be friends with people I disagree with. I have at least 3 friends who didn't like THE LAST JEDI and that's okay, I still love them even though they're wrong.

But a disagreement over *fundamental human rights* is still a deal breaker.
