As wastewater has become a core part of infectious disease surveillance worldwide, new guidance from WHO, GLOWACON, ASTHO, and others has laid key foundations for public health. But in practice, it’s not always obvious how to apply these recommendations or choose among available tools.

I have a new paper out about Illinois's Restroom Access Act (Ally's Law), which provides emergency access to private restrooms for people with qualifying health conditions, primarily inflammatory bowel diseases.

#NIH is hanging by a thread. The #CDC has been decimated. #RFK Jr. and Russell #Vought are psychopaths--I don't say this frivolously--they are cold, calculating, inflicting violence on millions through public policy. It is where we are right now. These men are not normal. 1/
Dr. Daskalakis in a resignation letter you can read below: “The intentional eroding of trust in low-risk vaccines favoring natural infection and unproven remedies will bring us to a pre-vaccine era where only the strong will survive…Eugenics plays prominently in the rhetoric being generated…”
Dr. Demetre, in his resignation from the CDC, said this:
“I have never experienced such radical non-transparency, nor have I seen such unskilled manipulation of data to achieve a political end rather than the good of the American people”.
It is an outrage that RFK Jr. remains as head of HHS.
Enough is enough. The health of the country is in danger. Read our resignation letters: insidemedicine.substack.com/p/breaking-n...
NEW 🚨 The violence is the point. Elected Dems must call for widespread resignations (RFK, Bhattacharya, Prasad) in response to the CDC shooting. Public health must demand this of them, and the public must demand that of us. With @publichealthguy1.bsky.social in STAT: www.statnews.com/2025/08/15/c...
@defendpublichealth.bsky.social issued its report today:
"Improving the Health of Americans Together: An evidence-based framework for addressing the root causes of illness in the U.S." Oh and we call for #RFKJr to go! www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...
We can't provide solutions to support the health of Americans without facing the root causes like poverty and lack of access to healthcare. #IHATnotMAHA #IHAT #MAHA
My latest for @thenation.com. RFK Jr. Has Been Handed a Very Dangerous Weapon: how a bigoted doctor, an extremist judge, and the Supreme Court all combined to give the secretary a powerful new way to undermine public health. @jsalomon.bsky.social www.thenation.com/article/soci...
The ICJ Advisory Opinion on Obligations of States in respect of Climate Change livestream has begun.
The Court begins by concluding that the questions put to it are legal in nature and that it has jurisdiction to provide an Advisory Opinion.

I encourage everyone, especially people who are or have been sympathetic to Israel, to read this long, powerful piece by an Israeli-American historian of genocide and Nazism. An IDF company commander in the 1973 Yom Kippur war, he’s lived in the U.S. since 1989.

Parents insist their kids go to college to get business degrees. Administrators respond by defunding the humanities and social sciences, while hiring business profs at ~2X what historians get paid. Meanwhile, businesses say over and over that they want to hire humanities and social science majors.
If you're new around here: The actions taken by the Trump administration against FEMA have made it impossible for FEMA to effectively respond to any large disaster.
This is what we have been warning about for the past six months. I'll drop some links if you need to catch up.
It's alot.
As someone who has been on the business end of nationwide injunctions that I thought were improper, I find the question of what rules we should adopt for them to be genuinely hard. But yesterday's decision deserves massive criticism, for at least two reasons. (Thread.)
On the three year anniversary of Dobbs, it's important to remember that all of this is true:
- The opinion has caused terrible suffering.
- Abortion numbers are higher than they have been in years.
- The antiabortion movement is losing over and over again.
- Abortion is more popular than ever. /1
I subscribe to the @newyorker.com, I was part of ACT UP, I knew Larry Kramer well and know Tony Fauci too. Daniel Immerwahr's piece on RFKJr, features this and other passages that need a reponse. 1/
Makary and Prasad have a sounding board piece written in NEJM about the future of COVID-19 vaccine regulation at the FDA.
Some thoughts:
This could have big implications for state authority to regulate the practice of medicine and health insurance coverage decisions
This is a damned outrage. Workers will die because of this decision. (via the outstanding newsletter published by @jordanz.bsky.social ). open.substack.com/pub/progress...

1/ HHS halts data collection on critical public health issues amid cuts.
Cutting back on data collection is like telling police to fight crime without knowing when/where/how it’s happening.
It’s wasteful, reckless & ineffective.

A graphic showing that 50.6% of research projects with "LGBT" search terms have been cancelled. 45.8% of grants with "transgender" in the search terms have been cancelled. 45.5% of research grants with "vaccine hesitancy" have been cancelled. 3.4% grants with "HIV" or "AIDS" have been cancelled.
The US National Institutes of Health has terminated nearly 800 research projects at a breakneck pace, wiping out significant chunks of funding to entire scientific fields

HHS Secretary RFK Jr. is a danger to the public’s health and should resign or be fired, says APHA. In just a few short weeks, his actions on vacccines, fluoride and other public health science have shown how wrong he is for the job. Read & share our statement: apha.org/news-and-med...
Here’s what RFK Jr. has done since a measles outbreak began which has killed 3 people so far:
1. Buried a CDC report showing need for vaccination
2. Recommended vitamin A, resulting in liver damage in kids
3. Defunded vaccination clinics nationally
4. Hired a fraud to manipulate vaccine data
NYU preemptively capitulates to those who would censor policy analysis in global health.
(If discussing the global health implications of USAID cuts is considered "antigovernment" — and forbidden — this will undermine academic inquiry . . . and global health policy)

Figured I’d hop on here today for the 15th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act.
With everything going on right now, it’s easy to feel like regular folks can’t make a difference – but the ACA is a reminder that change is possible when we fight for progress.
