I've never quite understood why team canada, esp in juniors, is so hell-bent on not bringing the skiled guys and bringing two-way or older players instead, specifically on D this year

Good on them for actually communicating, that is a big step in the right direction

I agree on that, he is slightly overpaid for a 4C of course, but he stabilises the penalty kill a lot and is decent defensively, albeit bad offensively. Its just that the team doesnt really have any other center right now who is defense first, so he brings a different style of play, which is needed!
