I spent several days giving aid in Izium. My heart is breaking that they are reliving the nightmare again.

I spent several days in Izium. The first major building that was under repair after occupation. It sits on the town square, next to the destroyed regional hospital. You can see it’s the same building from the scaffolding and construction materials. My heart aches for Izium.

My return from Ukraine left me feeling hollow. Even a three-week taste of the glory and heartache that Ukraine had become haunted me. I wanted to do more, even in my absence. It didn’t take too long, between my occassional talks with Taras and others. I decided to do a fundraiser. 8/9

However, the Georgian National Legion never represented themselves in that way. Instead, they created a myth that they were an autonomous fighting unit, aided by photos and video taken by a legitimate unit and passed along. They lied from the beginning for clout, rather than tell the truth. 7/9

In that first year of the war, the GNL, by all accounts, was an organization that could best be described as a fraternal organization, supporting fellow Georgians who came to fight in post ‘14 Ukraine. UAF regulations prohibit non-integrated legions; they would have been assigned to units. 6/9

I went home, having been within 5 miles of the Russian border one day (Zolochev), but never seeing frontline action. I remained in contact with Taras in the first few weeks while trying to convince my bosses to at least hire a stringer to head out with them. It never happened. 5/9

I was talking to Taras, “The Reshet” within minutes. He wanted me to stay in Ukraine, film the GNL “in action” and provide CNN “exclusive footage.” It piqued my interest — filming on the front line. I was volunteering on my vacation, but I contacted my managers. The request was denied. 4/9

Prior to my volunteering, I had heard the GNL platformed on Mriya report on Twitter, and seen numerous fundraisers started by a core group of people (to be named later). So I was under the impression they were an autonomous unit. I took the call. 3/9
