One of my favorite things about Asia—The customer isn’t always right.
My first day in HK someone in the hotel was filling up a plastic bottle at a jug labeled “No Bottle Filling.”
An employee confronted them, said “no,” then when they argued he took the bottle and walked back into the kitchen.

Oh goddamn it. Of course the one that gets picked up always has an error.
Ariyoshi was a titan in Hawai’i politics in the 70s and 80s, with influence that extended well beyond that.
The first Asian-American governor of any state or territory, and a military intel translator during WWII and the occupation of Japan, he governed the state for an unbroken span of 13 years.
Dude they sliced Austin like a pie ten years ago.
I hate how outlets treat this crap like the Wacky Races where Snidely Whiplash is just expected to cheat without consequence and everyone else has to just act like that’s normal.
"Strategically, Ukraine has a theory of victory that looks increasingly plausible, while Russia’s is crumbling....Russia bet the farm on the theory that meat waves would overwhelm Ukraine while the United States and Hungary blocked Western support, and failed."

7YO: Today in lab we tried biomimicry, where you design something inspired by nature.
ME: Cool!
7YO: I built a helmet inspired by turtle shell and antlers. Then I ran into a wall!
ME: ...is this why the nurse's office sent me TWO notices about head injuries today?
7YO: No, those were different.
1) This kind of internal communication between justices NEVER becomes public, not till decades later, usually after everyone involved has died.
2) The conservative justices enjoined a significant Presidential policy *without argument* or lower court review b/c they really didn’t like it.
SCOTUS judges know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

Here are some of the day’s top developments: Trump has said that US forces have taken custody of an Iranian-flagged vessel that tried to get through the US blockade of Iranian ports. Iran’s military confirmed an attack claimed by the US military on a ship returning from China, vowing it will “retaliate soon”. Iranian state media is reporting that Tehran is not currently planning to attend talks with the US, citing the ongoing blockade as well as Washington’s shifting positions and “excessive demands”. It comes after Trump ordered US negotiators to travel to Pakistan on Monday, just days before a two-week ceasefire expires.
I'm starting to think this is not going well guys
Love the HK film retrospectives SCMP is doing lately.

The world has lost over $50 billion worth of crude oil that has not been produced since the Iran war began nearly 50 days ago and the aftershock of the crisis will be felt for months and even years to come.-Reuters

Reports of a third attempted arson attack on Jewish targets in North London this week. It's getting really scary and more people need to start taking it seriously.
literally every day my wife or I go outside with our daughter people go out of their way to be friendly, offer aid or a kind word, no matter where we've traveled. it's nice to remember that hostility as default mode of interaction is not destiny, much as it benefits some to pretend it is
some things about becoming a parent are radicalizing in ways I expected - e.g being reminded viscerally how screwed we'd all be if childcare and other care work disappeared. but other things are radicalizing in ways I didn't - like experiencing constant spontaneous solidarity in ways big and small
Buying your kid a Transformer is just signing yourself up for a second career of turning a car into a robot then back into a car.
There was no dearth of effort to spend money in ways Americans could feel good about under the Biden admin. It didn't work because mainstream press by and large refused to give it airtime, and online influencers refused to discuss it because it wasn't considered fashionable to acknowledge it.
Hey look, I got a wild @frogcroakley.bsky.social to write an Extra History episode on the History of Zoos, and how the tragedy of Chunee the Elephant helped create the more ethical research institutions we have today!

LOTS of fun with this one. Zombies are always good, but with the Tapestry, and with the research and world-building that made Katerah one of my favourite settings :)

my unpopular opinion is that we're better off with Kash running the FBI and we should hope he keeps his job as long as Trump does
So I guess we have robot cheerleaders now?
This dude is from New York City and has never heard the term corner store.

OMG I was sure this couldn’t be real because it’s so stupid, but of course it’s real.
Y’all need to understand that that trash you eat on rice covered in flavored mayo is not real poke.
If you want real poke, here’s where you go.
Dear god. Very, very serious allegations of mass civil rights violations at the State of Florida's Everglades immigration detention center (officially known as "Alligator Alcatraz").
Wife just yelled from the other room for me to come quickly because someone is talking about Warhammer 40K on Top Chef.
Delighted to find both Shroud and Lives of Bitter Rain on the Locus shortlist this year, amongst some amazing company!
