In our latest paper in @plosmedicine.org, we explore trade-offs in diagnostic algorithm, coverage, and duration of community screening for #TB, highlighting the importance of symptom-agnostic approaches and the need for strategies to sustain impact when screening ends.

Awesome - looking forwards to it.
We are staying on the Kintyre Peninsula, and took the ferry across to Gigha (community owned island in inner Hebrides) yesterday.
Other favourites are Mull and North Uist.
Always welcome if coming past Glasgow.
Me and the family on a remote Scottish island today.
Exactly. These data are from prevalence surveys, where people are randomly selected from urban and rural areas and offered TB testing, aiming to precisely estimate prevalence. So shouldn’t be affected by testing capacity.
We found that #TB epidemics are becoming increasingly urbanised.
Important implications for supporting effective public health interventions to end tuberculosis epidemics.

In this systematic review & meta-analysis, Mortazavi & colleagues (@petermacp.bsky.social) investigate urban vs rural differences in #TB prevalence between 2000 and 2024 in 26 low- and middle-income countries, finding that TB epidemics have become increasingly urbanized 🧪 #MedSky

In meta-analysis of national and subnational #TB prevalence surveys, we found that between 2000-2024, tuberculosis epidemics are rapidly urbanising.

What if targeting TB in men could benefit entire populations?
This new modelling study from @alexandra-richards.bsky.social suggests exactly that 👇
✔️ More treatment coverage
✔️ Address social & structural risks
👉 Big reductions in TB incidence & mortality

Our analysis of #TB exposure and transmission patterns is now in @pnas.org. @petedodd24.bsky.social and I found a majority of TB transmission globally is attributable to contact with adult men, while contributions to transmission by age are more variable across regions.

1/📢 In our new publication, we estimate that in 2022, 134 million people worldwide had a recent Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection and were at high risk of progressing to TB disease. Read the full paper in PLOS Medicine (tinyurl.com/mtbinfection). #TBSky
Very please to share the results of the SaDAPT Trial.
In Malawi and Lesotho, same-day initiation for ART for #HIV in people with #TB symptoms was non-inferior to ART initiation after TB investigations, and with no safety concerns.

One of the pleasures of my academic job is my role as an Academic Editor for PLOS Medicine.
Next up in our 'meet the editors' is Academic Editor Peter MacPherson (@petermacp.bsky.social), Professor of Global Public Health and Head of Public Health at the University of Glasgow. Peter also specializes in infectious disease epidemiology, tuberculosis, HIV, and evidence synthesis 🧪 #MedSky
I have been messing around with biscale plots here… but not sure whether they work on not. Could work with a hex plot too I guess
We are recruiting! We are looking for statistical methodologists at Research Fellow / Senior Research Fellow level for our new Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE) in Clinical Trial Innovation. If you know of anyone who might be interested, please share!

I biked to work today in the snow in Glasgow. It was delightful!
Our Editor’s Choice commentary in @cidjournal.bsky.social finds that reported TB symptoms are an inadequate classifier of disease state, as they are heavily influenced by context and substantial interviewer variability, and may have alternative causes.
