It's VE Day! Victory in Europe, 80 years! Here's one of my favourite sets from our Bad Squiddo Games range - a lady is finally home from serving away in the ATS and her girlfriend couldn't be more delighted, she pinches her hat playfully while they celebrate the end of the war. These are currently on one of our micro diorama slabs that show off the ranges, so I took the photo as they are arranged (and I don't want to jinx breaking them so soon to UKGE) , and something poignant came out of it. Noor Inyat Khan was in the way. When taking this sort of photo I would keep the space behind them fairly plain so it focuses on them, but these minis are currently fixed down, so I was trying to find the right angle. But then it occured to me - she isn't in the way at all. You can't have the celebration without remembrance. Noor was shot by the nazis before the war was over and so never made any of the celebrations, though her contribution as an SOE agent helped make it possible, much like the many, many millions lost in WW2. We must remember those who fought fascism, their stories, their motives and their actions, and honour what they did by carrying it on. Also in the shot we have a kiss blowing SOE Nancy Wake, who did thankfully live to a ripe old age (and tell her many incredible stories), and also a singing Josephine Baker who not only worked with the resistance in France, but after the war returned to America to continue the fight against segregation and racism- even speaking right before Martin Luther King Jr at the March on Washington. We will remember them.
