Iranian musician Ali Ghamsari has staged a sit-in outside the Damavand power plant in protest against US and Israeli threats to target vital infrastructure.

Ghamsari said he would remain at the site and play music there in the hope of helping prevent attacks on Iran’s energy facilities.

Honestly, the great crisis of our society is the unwillingness of institutions to inflict consequences.

Impeach the president, fire the sex pests, expel cheating students, excommunicate an unrepentant heretic, prosecute the war criminals.

Believe in your institution enough to enforce its rules.

I worry a lot about communities formed around the commitment: anyone who ever tries to tell you anything short of the maximally emotionally satisfying thing to you right now is a liar who wants you to suffer.

Spectacular high-resolution image of our home planet viewed through the Orion Crew Module window by the Artemis II astronauts as they continue their journey to the Moon on Flight Day 2, 3 April 2026 (pic: NASA)

A full disc image of Earth, as seen from the Orion Crew Module. The planet is a pale blue, swirling with white clouds and glowing slightly lighter blue in place from reflected light. At lower left, a large brown landmass is Africa, with Spain and Portugal with twinkling lights where the planet curves. At top right, auroras glow in a thin green glow, just barely separated from the planet's surface. Earth is set against the black of space (pic: NASA/R.Wiseman)

This may be the first time I've seen this style of graphic where it accurately portrays the moon as a moving target.

Just a staggering amount of math and engineering that goes into this.

This is my favorite climate change chart. Japanese monks, aristocrats, and emperors kept meticulous records of cherry blossom festivals for 1,200 years and accidentally built the world's longest climate dataset.

Art. Black and white drawing of an otter's, drawn with abstract shapes and lines. The otter is looking at you pretty hard, and it has a fish in it's mouth. Its whiskers are extremely whiskery. Surely the otter has a name, but otters keep such things a secret. So we'll have to call it Velmaroxe for now. Water curls around it, and there is a title next to it that reads: "The Otter: Friendly Water-Sausage"

Black and white drawing of a hellbender salamander, made of abstract shapes and lines. It is curled around with it's tail pointing up and to the left. Above it is text made of abstract shapes that reads: "The Snot Otter", then a line, and below is is more regular sans serif text that reads: "It'snot an Otter." In the bottom right corner are the initials JWG, which is me, 'cause I drew it.

there's so much bad in the world but there's also people who lift up and carry an elderly bat around every day so he can pretend he's flying again, and that's the part of the world I think is worth fighting for

Yesterday I gave a guest lecture in a colleague's class. They had just wrapped up the ODYSSEY and had discussed other epics like the RAMAYANA before reading an excerpt from my FEATHERED SERPENT, DARK HEART OF SKY: MYTHS OF MEXICO.

I discussed an "Aztec" equivalent to "arete" and "dharma."

All it takes is one financial tragedy. Without the social safety net, you just fall right through. I've see physical and mental breakdowns that took people out of work for two years. You go from middle class illusions of stability to desperate poverty shockingly fast in this country.

I don’t really know what I expect in posting this, but maybe some people see it and can learn from it.

I’ll call it “lessons from an unwilling immigration attorney.”

So, you have a logo.

I want you to run it through these tests, to see if it's an effective logo, or just a nice illustration.

Because I see so many people who reveal logos for their new, exciting thing ... and it's not fit for purpose.
And you'll learn that hard way if you don't check.

Can you imagine being the most famous Black person in the world at one point, only to die in near obscurity?

The American government made sure no one would remember one of the greatest Americans to ever live.

He was 77

This line graph illustrates the percentage change in agency staff levels from the previous year for nine major U.S. federal scientific and health organizations between the fiscal years 2016 and 2025. The agencies tracked include the CDC, Department of Energy, EPA, FDA, NASA, NIH, NIST, NOAA, and NSF. For the majority of the timeline between 2016 and 2023, the agencies show relatively stable fluctuations, generally staying within a range of +5% to -5% change per year. However, there is a dramatic and uniform plummet starting in the 2024–25 period. Every agency depicted shows a sharp downward trajectory, with staffing losses ranging from approximately -15% to over -25%. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows the most significant decline, dropping to roughly -26%, while the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) shows the least severe but still substantial drop at approximately -15%.

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.
