It's been a mess for a while. European club football was underdeveloped (for various reasons) and I think the early expansions in the 90s boosted the competition but when they went to 4/5 per big country and squeezed out the smaller champions they made the whole GS pointless and devalued everything

Interestingly (at least to me) the first European Cup wasn't a draw. It was a pre-determined bracket decided by a French newspaper that sceptics (& me) would say was rigged to give the French champions an easier path to the final.

Plenty of non champions in that too. Only 7/16 had won their leagues
