"The rise of extreme wealth is one of the clearest signs of this imbalance. In 1987, billionaires held wealth equal to 3% of global GDP. Today this tiny elite, just 0.0001% of the world population, owns the equivalent of *16%* of world GDP in wealth."
A white garment with some kind of food stain. Humiliating.
A pair of dirty hands rest on a car engine. Rough, tough, cool.
Here is an easy solution:
Food stains are humiliating, as they suggest you're a little baby who can't feed themselves.
Oil stains, such as those you'd get from working on your car, suggest you're tough, independent, and skilled.
Thus, simply cover your food stains with used motor oil.

The late Tony Benn set out five questions about power. In his final speech to the House of Commons he said that on meeting any powerful person, one should always ask: What power have you got? Where did you get it from? In whose interests do you exercise it? To whom are you accountable? And how can we get rid of you?
"How can we get rid of you?"

I see there's an analytic vs continental thing blowing up on Substack and: no. No we are not doing this. It is not 1998 anymore. Searle's dead, Derrida's dead, we're not doing this anymore. Go get a sandwich and look at a pigeon.
"universities.. are among the few public institutions capable of cultivating democratic habits at scale (which is why they are among the first institutions to be attacked by authoritarian regimes). But they, too, will have to reckon with their own failures..."

"Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth." - Mississippi's declaration of concession, 1861
Philosophy is for entertainment purposes only. Philosophers can make mistakes, and they may not work before 11 am or after 3 pm. Don’t rely on philosophers for important advice. Read philosophy at your own risk.
'The number of English language and literature academics fell by 8 per cent to 4,680 – among the largest decrease of all disciplines.
And the number employed in modern languages dropped 7 per cent to 4,890. This is 17 per cent below peak levels in 2015-16.' 1/3

Trump's aides are telling him that destroying Iran's infrastructure is fair game.
They are wrong. They are advocating war crimes.
Unfortunately, the targeting of infrastructure is far from new. See: "The Dangerous Rise of 'Dual-Use' Objects in War": papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....
Esquire couldn’t book this actor for an interview so fed previous responses through a couple of thief machines and ‘interviewed’ a digital photocopy. Including asking personal questions about his dad.
People need to be sued and then fired for this.

Zohran didn't win by relying on standard turnout patterns. We had to fundamentally transform the Democratic electorate.
I was part of a group of NYC-DSA members that applied lessons from our previous campaigns to design the “universe” of voters to talk to. Here's how we won 🧵

Please read this, understand what the govt is doing & take action. Labour's immigration proposals swap integration for segregation, introduce a Dubai-style Kafala system of coercive employer control & drive low-income families into poverty. They're an abomination.

Can we have one of these inquiries here, please? #UKHE is also leading a stupid amount of money from the public institutions to these leechy private businesses. And yes, the lack of accountability is a key part of the issue about that.
Delighted that Sheffield won department of the year in the annual BPA prizes!! And fab to see colleagues @chongminglim.bsky.social and Jim Chamberlain getting recognition too.

One can see the technical reason why the law did not change following High Court verdict - the court did not issue an Order pending an appeal, and it is the Order and not the judgment which has legal effect.
But this really is an unsatisfactory situation, when a court says something is unlawful.
Yes! And YET it's also amazing to see what those students got done despite the backlash and intransigence. They went from an America where they were the only people daring to talk about this issue to one where bipartisan support for Israel is cracking, public opinion shifting, AIPAC is shunned, etc.
even setting aside the intended effect of campus crackdowns: one difference between now and two years ago is that half or so of them are gone, having received their four year degrees, and "students" (2026) and "students" (2024) refer to two largely different populations of people
