This week, we delivered our first round of Co-op member boycott pledges to REI’s corporate headquarters outside Seattle. Turns out - 20,000 pledge cards are really heavy!

This report shows one of the many ways REI has strayed from the values that made customers and workers love the Co-op.
Now is the time to speak up and remind them who they’re accountable to: PLEDGE TODAY to boycott REI starting. Visit BoycottREI.com for more information.
The company continues to stay silent about these supply chain issues, mistreatment of workers, proving that REI’s image of sustainability and community is just that—an image, not a commitment.
Across the facilities, workers who tried to organize or report abuse faced threats of termination. REI knows about these conditions, but not a single instance was found in which they effectively intervened to protect these workers.
In Vietnam, REI has partnered with Formosa, a company responsible for deadly factory incidents and the country’s worst environmental disaster. The Formosa chemical spill killed millions of fish and destroyed the livelihoods of local residents.

One textile supplier in El Salvador fired women for being pregnant. In Cambodia, another denied legally required maternity leave payment.
In the Philippines, a factory for REI-branded products wouldn’t give workers regular contracts to avoid giving them benefits and undermine the union there.
In China, workers reported schedules so extreme that they sometimes went an entire month without a single day off, while being paid near or at minimum wage. Workers struggle to feed themselves and their families.
This practice is known as “debt bondage” and is described by the UN as a form of modern-day slavery. REI stopped sourcing from the factory to avoid facing the consequences.
In Taiwan, workers reported having to pay massive recruitment fees to get hired. The fees drove workers into debt while living in unsafe housing. They were threatened deportation if they spoke out.
A UMass Amherst Labor Center and Students for International Labor Solidarity report found forced labor, mass pollution, and poverty wages in factories abroad producing REI-branded products. 🧵

Here’s what your favorite outdoor Co-op doesn’t want you to know 👇
REI presents itself as value-driven and sustainable — but their supply chain tells a different story.
Visit BoycottREI.com today to pledge, then spread the word to every REI member you know. It’s time we show REI loud and clear: No contract, no gear.

They’ve undermined Co-op democracy and silenced member voices, turning the Co-op we loved into a corporation apathetic to its workers’ needs.
REI has made it clear they’re anti-union, anti-worker, and anti-democratic. Now we need to make it clear to them that we’re demanding accountability.
Meanwhile, REI pays obscene amounts to Morgan Lewis, an anti-union law firm.
Despite claiming they’re struggling financially, REI has spent an arm and a leg on the same union-busting lawyers who are helping SpaceX and Amazon union-bust.

Despite being closer than ever to a deal, they refused to meet us in the middle on wages and job security protections.
Instead, the Co-op immediately moved to illegally implement drastic cuts to benefits and pay at our union stores.
For four years, we’ve been fighting to win a union contract for our 11 stores.
Most recently, after 6 months of bargaining with REI at a national table, the company sabotaged negotiations by walking away from us at the last second.
TAKE ACTION: Pledge to support our boycott at REI
Last week, REI Union workers voted overwhelmingly to approve a boycott of this year’s anniversary sale. Here’s why, and how you can support us: 👇

Last year, after 115,000 Co-op members voted to reject REI's corporate board candidates, our CEO Mary Beth Laughton promised to return REI to its roots and keep REI "an incredible place to work"
One year later, she broke her promise by trying to illegally implement drastic wage and benefits cuts.
🧵THREAD: REI refused to reach a contract with our union after 6 months of negotiations. They also broke their promise to members and workers - revealing their true colors as an anti-union company.

Thank you for helping shine a light on this — our coworkers and members are crushed about this news and we're preparing to fight back. Spreading the word is crucial in the meantime ✊
text overlay: REl's Board of Director's election starts today, December 26th, and is open until January 31st. Many of you have asked us how to vote in this year's election.
As part of an agreement we reached with REl in September, we've agreed not to weigh in on this year's board election so that we can stay focused on negotiating strong first contracts for all the unionized REI stores. We trust that REl members will evaluate this year's candidates and make the right choices.
We're feeling hopeful that we will have good news to share with you all in February about our first union contracts. Thank you for your continued support, and happy holidays!
You can go to www.REIvote.com to vote in REl's annual board of directors election, now until January 31st.
We only have a couple of bargaining sessions left before we have a contract to vote on, so it’s crucial we speak up for the changes we all need to see.

The improvements we win in our union contract could shape the future of our Co-op for everyone - not just workers at union stores.
