it sucks even more knowing that these kinds of practices are commonplace in indie scenes outside of the us market (like here in italy where you basically have to work for free). go to indie publishers only with completed projects that will look good on your resume
you might as well consider the advance the only payment you're (sadly) ever gonna get from a comic publishing deal and plan accordingly that's all i'm gonna say
But money? Small-press publishing is best for cartoonists starting out who have a day job or some other source of support, and you almost invariably have to look at it as a wholesale financial loss that may yield long-term professional benefits at the expense of short-term gains.
With most small publishers, you almost never see royalties even on a modest seller; it's almost always the case that while they take 50% of the profits (larger publishers give you a percentage of cover, which is harder to creatively doctor), 100% of the costs, not 50, are deducted from your end.
