It was quite obvious before this ban came in that it wouldn't work (impossible to enforce) and if serious about the policy objective it should be a tax with ring-fenced funds split between WEEE recycling infrastructure and health outcomes.

Rachel Reeves vows to fix 'broken' student loans system Chancellor Rachel Reeves has hit back at demands to overhaul the students loans system, suggesting the government had other priorities and was not in a rush to fix it

Reforming ‘broken’ student loans ‘not front of queue’, says Rachel Reeves..

Millions on less than median income pay marginal rate of income tax of 20%, 8% NIC, 9% loan repayment, 5% in pension auto enrolment.

Little left for life.

Inertia is unacceptable.

If a Labour councillor in the Corbyn era had done this, it would (correctly) be all over the Tele, Times, etc.

3rd or 4th of these stories in the past few weeks broken by the Jewish News or JC and not one of them has been picked up...

Absolutely. People will sneer because of the messenger, but seeing your amount owed balloon each year despite paying thousands towards it makes interest the most egregious part of student loan repayments for middle earning graduates.

1 month ago 1 0 0 0

Completely agree. Martin's point is all well and good in theory, but when you're seeing your amount owed balloon by thousands each year it's soul destroying.

3 things should be addressed:
Interest level
Repayment thresholds
Percentage repaid monthly.

But the interest feels particularly acute

A lot of self congratulations from the Times in this article and no mention of the Rethink Repayment campaign...

Regardless, as long as we get the right outcome

Government of maximum pain for minimal gain back at it again

How bleak. The Chancellors fiscal rule is essentially balanced on the back of graduates, sold the dream of university and "mobile phone contract level" repayments.

£99,987 and counting: graduates trapped by ballooning student loans As their debts rise, graduates reveal how loans are reshaping careers, finances and faith in the system

£99987 and counting: graduates trapped by student loans.

Govt froze repayment threshold. By 2030, be at minimum wage.

At the margin grads pay 20% inc tax + 8%NIC +9% repayment. Insane.

Loan increases, if not repaid.

Grads can't buy home, start family/business.

Abolish Uni fees. Write-off debt.

Rage, rage against the growing of the debt It's past time to abolish real interest rates for Plan 2 Student Loans

For every additional £100 a Plan 2 graduate earns they repay an extra £9 - but their debt also accrues an additional £7.20 in interest, due to the rising interest rate.

Will student loans be the next mis-selling scandal? [FREE TO READ] Graduates are in uproar about Budget changes to loan repayment terms, and they have a point

This country's ability to rinse the young and then berate them as lazy avocado addicts is ridiculous.

They're so up against it, it's madness.

Conservatives get 14 years of rope, Labour get 1.5 for having been "tried".

Voters are entitled to feel how they feel of course, but has the electorate ever been this impatient? A social media era phenomenon?

To expand on point a) generational unfairness is at it's absolute peak. House prices, money spent on pensions, adult social care, frozen tax bands, Brexit denying opportunities.

I take your point about an olive branch, but has Labour's triple lock support stopped it haemorrhaging older voters?
