thank you for playing!! i'm glad you liked the config in grenadier. that is probably my favorite part of the game too :-)

i was also just going through your platformer writeup/cart. i've been meaning to make a game with pico8 and your post showed up serendipitously. i appreciate your work there!

+1, the things we care about for games that do differ across OSes don't even appear much in stdlibs! eg. windowing systems, audio systems, input handling (for keyboard, mouse, gamepad)...

you at least need to pull in (or write your own) "platform layer"

it’s funny that “cinema” (used like “kino”) is used to describe impressive or breathtaking moments (esp. those with strong visuals) in games. i think we should start just saying “Game” instead

fwiw i think other media have analogous forms of advice which are more about creating something marketable. games do have it bad, but for ex. i can certainly think of writing advice which is more in service of the marketability of a book

ie. the state space for a good puzzle is like that of an unreliable program

1 month ago 1 0 0 0

the properties which make reliable and good software are sort of opposite those which make interesting puzzles. in software you might want something to "eventually" happen, or "always" happen (ie. along every execution path). in puzzles you want only a few scenarios where things happen

same (going on 1.5yr), I dual boot to windows since i'm targeting the platform, but use pretty much the same software across OSes, haven't had many problems. definitely more frustrations with windows come to mind

Whiskerwood - Gaming on M1 Apple silicon Macs and MacBooks, bugs, fixes, compatiblity and troubleshooting guides - AppleGamingWiki

there's a somewhat promising compatibility story on macOS- looks like someone got it running with crossover www.applegamingwiki.com/wiki/Whisker...

i've also see people use parallels for software development. though both of these do cost money and ymmv (user in the link has a pretty beefy mac)
