Well there are versions of neo on 1.20.1. But the majority of people playing that mc version still use forge and sadly neo and forge are not always compatible, because forge decided to put many breaking changes in their 1.20.1 versions.

But if you're a mc dev who mods to be able to play with the mods you make, I'd say choose the version you are most likely to play yourself

I choose the currently most popular version and then only port forward.
I barely ever backport cuz that's usually not worth the effort.

If I would start a mod rn, I would use 1.21.1 probably. 1.20.1 would also work, but as a forge dev how prefers neoforge over forge, I try to avoid 1.20
