There are mods to change the geometry to the 3DS version which is cool, but I don’t want that — just a higher fidelity version of the N64 game is perfect to me

Ship of Harkinian makes Ocarina of Time feel the way you remember. I downloaded a texture pack that looks faithful to the original art style and along with widescreen and free-camera control, it’s a joy to play while maintaining whatever intangible special elements were there in 1998.

I think where Ship of Harkinian and various other fan projects get it right is that they clearly have a reverence for the original works and are not embarrassed by them. Yes they smooth over some of the rough edges, but they feel modern while still retaining what made them great in the first place.

Kind of wild what a difference full camera control makes. I’ve played a bit of Mario 64 recently (in 3D All-Stars) and the continuous free camera in OoT via Ship of Harkinian makes it feel so much more modern than the stilted step-by-step camera of Mario 64.

I’m generally of the opinion that we should be positive, let’s not yuck each other’s yum, etc — but I also think there are a LOT of valid criticisms with that game and don’t mind listening to some of them lol

Watching a 3-1/2 hour video called “I HATE TEARS OF THE KINGDOM” and it’s pretty much spot on with every one of my criticisms of the game
