and yes, I would also take an 11 hour train ride to Chicago vs. flying because you're adding at least an extra 4 hours onto every flight time vs. a train for security and getting to and from the airport, and the added comfort and convenience more than makes up for the rest of the lost time

what I would do for a 4 hour train that could take me to Seattle from the Bay Area (same distance)

and if all these Disney live action monstrosities are anything to go by, we're not going to be overcoming the bias against animation as a serious art form any time soon lol

I'd 100% be down for that. Makes me sad that so much of American animation is either geared toward kids shows or comedies. Since the Japanese animation industry is going to understandably be focused on manga, we don't really get coverage for American/British fiction that'd be best animated

the source material screams for high quality animation that would make it far cheaper to produce visually and thus allow it to take its time. maybe some animation form will pick it up in the future, would love to see that.

believe that they'll reform themselves, or that there's nothing wrong in the first place. Protests have not worked, primarying has not worked, mass popular energy and criticism have not worked, their own electoral failures have not worked! they have to be kicked out and replaced with something else.

Besides, even if your plan is to reform the Democratic Party, then that process would necessarily start with posing a substantive risk to its viability. it will not reform unless threatened with extinction, so the only reason *not* to threaten their electoral chances would be if you fundamentally

haven't been paying attention since the 1970s, the Republicans continue to win anyway!

To the latter I'd say that clearly something has to give, and the costs of putting it off with the lingering spectres of climate change and American decline on the horizon we should really be pushing to do something sooner rather than later. Yes, they will win in the short term, but just in case you

To the former I'd point out that the two parties on top have been and can be swapped out. An inevitable push toward two parties only means that a battle in a three way competition will mean the eventual dissolution of one of the factions, not that they will always be the same two.

the most common retorts are that our first past the post system will inevitably lead to a two party make-up, which is true, and that attacking, leaving, or splitting the vote with the Dems will result in GOP victories, which is also true

the problem is the Democratic Party itself. I earnestly do not believe that supporting the Democratic Party serves any function other than kicking the can down the road on alternative as conditions worsen, and the social stakes of inaction are pushed ever further upward. A different party is needed

In what might be the logical endpoint of American Zionism, the Heritage Foundation has declared that pro-Palestinian activism is not just antisemitic, but is in fact a shadowy global conspiracy … led by Jews. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/18/u...

Article:

"A group of diplomats from nearly two dozen countries were seen fleeing for cover during a trip to the West Bank city of Jenin on Wednesday as Israeli troops fired in the air to warn them away.
No injuries were reported in the confrontation, which involved diplomats from Britain, Canada, France, China, Russia and the European Union, among others, according to the Palestinian Authority foreign ministry.
The Israel Defense Forces apologized for the incident, which is liable to further sour ties between Jerusalem and swaths of the international community amid mounting global criticism of Israel's handling of the war in Gaza and its treatment of Palestinians.
The army said it ordered an inquiry, but also said the delegation had strayed from a preapproved route. Military officials were expected to hold talks with representatives from the countries involved in order to clear the air over the incident, the army said.
"The IDF regrets the inconvenience caused," it said in a statement.

Incredible — After shooting at a group of diplomats from nearly *two dozen* countries, the Israeli military says it "regrets the inconvenience caused."

The diplomats were from China, Brazil, India, Russia, Japan, Canada, Mexico, France, Türkiye, Spain, Portugal, Jordan, the UK, Egypt, and more.

if anything they seem to wear their hearts on their sleeves about what they care deeply about

1 year ago 12 0 0 0

could you give some examples of important things they don't care about?

1 year ago 14 0 1 0

what does Chapo think it's cringe to care about? artsy movies? particular video games? our decaying norms of civility? because they sure seem to care more about Gaza, healthcare, unions, and basic human dignity than most of the people who accuse them of being cynical grifters

1 year ago 0 0 0 0

always fun to ask people to get specific when this comes up, because the answer, should they actually provide one, typically demonstrates exactly how little they know about Chapo or the deep cynicism/myopia of their own political perspectives

Why We Can’t Log Our Way Out of Wildfires Trying to prevent forest fires with more logging may only make them worse, fire ecologists say. Will the federal government listen?

"Opening the canopy dries out the forest floor and increases wind speeds, both of which accelerate fire. Logging can also leave behind more combustible species like cheatgrass, an opportunistic invasive"

Logging increases wildfires. We have the most ignorant, anti-science people in charge.
