I grew up in Wisconsin and did my undergraduate work there - and I would take my friends to the great unconformity. We'd usually smoke a bunch of weed while I lectured about geology. Good times.

Erosion happens instead of deposition. Old rocks get eroded and that record of time is lost. Deposition begins again, now on top of much older rocks.
