Our publications keep coming! Check this out, it's open access. But feel free to order a hard copy for your library!
GloQur @gloqur.bsky.social ended on April 30, 2025. The team says goodbye. It has been an awesome journey! Feel free to revisit our results on gloqur.de! 😊
I've been working on recent Qur'an translations. A common feature here is the desire to defend Islam against attacks. What struck me today is that, contrary to what many (including Muslim translators) would intuitively assume, this did not start on September 11, 2001. It started on January 16, 1991.
This German Qur'an translation, allegedly by one Muhammad Abdallah (what a totally not AI-generated super-un-generic Muslim name!), is 100% identical to the result you get if you enter Marmaduke Pickthall's Qur'an translation into DeepL. Isn't this a weird coincidence? 😜
Interlinear Qur'an translation, a very old format, is alive and kicking! When I was in Indonesia in 2018, someone gave me a copy of their mosque's self-published version in the hopes of finding a publisher:

A graduate of Egypt's al-Azhar publishes an English Qur'an translation in the UK, which then becomes the object of a tug-of-war between various Sunni movements over doctrinal minutiae. There is no way anyone can "just translate" the Qur'an. #qurantranslationoftheweek

A single guy translated the Qur'an into five different languages! Okay, so they are all Turkic languages, but it's still quite a feat: gloqur.de/quran-transl...
The story of a single book can take us from Tunisia to Syria, Saudi Arabia, Mauretania, India, and France. The interplay between translators, editors, and publishers makes the translation of the Qu'an a truly global endeavor!

Did you know that the first edition of the famous convert's Muhammad Asad (born Leopold Weiss) "Message of the Qur'an" was aborted by the Muslim World League after circles in Saudi Arabia started feeling uncomfortable with his interpretations?

Did you know that the Bosnian Qur'an translation by Besim Korkut, first published in 1977, became so popular that it was even translated into further languages? #qurantranslationoftheweek

Der Kulturteil der Badischen Zeitung hat mich über Abdelkarim (nicht im Bild) gesetzt und jetzt fühle ich mich aber mal echt geehrt. 😂
Great turnout and atmosphere at the opening of our GloQur - The Global Qur'an exhibition. The guests enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions and have drinks and Syrian snacks with us. The exhibition will be open until April 5 and we offer guided tours in 10 languages!

Salafis started handing out Qur'an translations in German 🇩🇪 city centres in 2011. The group was banned in 2016 due to alleged connections to ISIS and since then, the German government has been at a loss what to do with the seized books. 🤯

Did you know that there is an English Qur'an translation that tries to accommodate ten different reading traditions, rather than – as most translations do – just the most widespread (Ḥafṣ ʿan ʿĀṣim)? gloqur.de/quran-transl...
My current project is collecting a database of vocalised Quranic manuscripts, to study which reading traditions they reflect. A large number (likely the majority) do not represent any known reading traditions from the literary tradition. A thread on one such a reading type. 🧵
The @GloQur team hard at work to bring this exhibition to you:

Did you know that one of the first Muslim women to translate the Qur'an was a Russian convert, Valerija Iman Porokhova? "Koran: Perevod Smyslov" was published in 1993 and despite the daring choice of a rhyming, poetic style, it was an instant hit among post-Soviet Muslims.

Since we only went to Bluesky long after our project started, we will do brief, one-post recaps of our "Qur'an translation of the week" feature, which has seen no less than 208 installments as of today. If you want to check out all of them, go to gloqur.de/category/glo... Or just follow us here. 😊
Did you know that the most longstanding and widely distributed Qur'an translation published by a nation state government comes from Indonesia? And that it might be the most successful translation ever produced by a committee as well? #qurantranslationoftheweek

Although other Ahmadis have produced their own English translations, Sher Ali’s remains the standard within the Ahmadiyya community, with the most recent edition published in 2021. #qurantranslationoftheweek ~ KK ~
