imo this is my theory but i think this incident is why miyazaki really gave up on having any true successors and wants ghibli to pass away with him
there's a lot of irony about this movie being his lasting legacy (tho he was animation director on 4 other ghibli movies too!) and it's why i feel sad every time i watch it, because it's really the one that has my heart and it was just his!! first!! one!! such potential lost bc of overwork
