I'm a professor at the flagship university for the fourth whitest state in the US. Over 80% of our students are white.
The biggest barrier to access here is that due to lack of state funding, we have top 10 highest tuition per capita of public unis in the country.
We also have a food pantry.

If you do basic needs work in higher education, you quickly come to realize how fucked the fundamentals of the economy are... particularly for young adults
"In this way, Medicaid isn’t just a safety net for the poor—it’s an invisible subsidy for everyone. When it shrinks, costs don’t disappear. They move to households, employers, local governments, school systems, ERs, jails. Everyone pays."

"Legality is a construct of the state, not a reflection of justice...These words don’t liberate us, they reinforce the idea that worth and safety must be earned within structures that were never meant to protect us in the first place."

Further evidence that the "child welfare" system actually cares very little for children's welfare.

Ugh been there. I am sure they will appreciate the opportunity to share. ♥️ get some rest immediately after.
Oh wow. Thank you for sharing. Heartbreaking.

Strongly suggest this read, we have been doing social work ed a disservice for so long. If now is not the time to redirect our curricula, then when?
“if we take seriously our stated commitment to social justice...full-spectrum education isn’t just pedagogically practical – it’s a moral imperative.”
Nearly nothing makes me roll my eyes more than an academic listing their annual accomplishments. Buuuut I am 37 weeks pregnant, in “early labor,” and still exercising, teaching, nesting, and moving projects forward. Pregnant people are amazing. Cis men could NEVER.
Ha. As someone who now lives in Boston this is hilarious for lots of reasons. Appreciate your candor.
Title of the journal Families in Society and the special issue: “ US Child Welfare System: Abolish or Reform”
I’m very proud of this point-counterpoint between me and Jessica Pryce. The papers give a good understanding of our very different views of this system and where our efforts should be focused. Plus, all of the articles in this issue are open access through the summer!

What relatively short video resources have you found helpful for teaching about fascism & authoritarianism? This won’t be extensive inquiry into the topic, but will provide a basic understanding in a class where this isn’t a focal topic - given current events
Want a good review of this whole "mutual academic defense compact," #MADC, universities standing up together thing? Want your colleagues and neighbors to get it? This is a good read.
THEY HAVE DEPORTED A TWO YEAR OLD CHILD BIRTHRIGHT CITIZEN
This is why I have no patience anymore for people playing games with this stuff.
(One of) the latest 4-alarm fires for higher ed. Social work, accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, needs to GET ON THIS. Thoughts, @cswe.bsky.social? And SW faculty followers? NADD members?

What's that line about staying neutral itself being a position? That stance, and moreso complying, may destroy higher ed more thoroughly than the federal administration. Also: our students are watching.
Photo of Senator Chris Van Hollen with Kilmar Abrego Garcia.
I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.
Now I keep thinking about watching her documentary. THANKS.
