2/2 “Warning shots” don’t justify shooting starving people. Bloodless journalism about bloody murder. The leadership at this newspaper should be ashamed. #Gaza
1/2 The New York Times doing its level best to minimize, make abstract, and pseudo-neutralize its reporting on the blatant killing of actual people, lest anyone conclude that Israeli forces might have done something wrong. #Gaza
American Pope! My sister (ex-Franciscan) says: “One of the better ones. He’s Augustinian and has spent most of his life outside the States. Most of his missionary life in Peru” #pope #youngpope #newpope

Looks as if @carolecadwalla.bsky.social will end up working for Tortoise. As if that would stop her from investigating her new bosses…. bylinetimes.com/2024/12/18/t...

This is a beautiful thoughtful response to both personal and national grief from @gruber.foo. ❤️🩹
So far (one day!) Bluesky seems a more cultured place? In that there’s more fine-grained control over what we read and follow. Which seems indispensable. I’m fond of Threads too, though anything outside the Meta Industrial Complex seems suddenly preferable!
As with all great essayists, dreamers, writers, artists, philosophers or friends, what Zadie Smith sets out here might actually make me change my mind and, possibly, my life. She’s that good. We’re lucky to have her. We’ll all need to decide how and where to stand through the next decades.🙏 #resist
We need more examinations of our own collusion with authoritarianism; of how it’s a relief in some conditions not to fight to be free, to give up on that dream. And of the simple ways we might not just #resist the tech bros and the algorithms that keep us in check; but how we might overcome them.
Hi everyone. I’m new to Bluesky. I can’t think of a better way to begin here than recommending you read or listen to this piece by Zadie Smith, who is, in my view, the greatest essayist of our time. You can access for free by registering for a new account. #resist
