no like literally I am sitting on so many stories that I don't have the legal protection to run at my newsletter and I can't find a newsroom with the money or resources to commission them

It's a good day to support independent sports analysis and criticism

Eddy has a new teammate who is Black and from Zambia, who is open about being intersex (assigned female at birth/not trans) and people thinking she's male because of what she wears.

Between that and them sharing the bench/competing for minutes, hard not to see this as a very mean personal attack.

Also, protect Barbra Banda, and Temwa Chawinga, and anyone else who doesn’t fit white femininity or white feminism at all costs. Even their own literal colleagues in the league apparently.

Funny how all that protect women’s sports energy went out the window as soon as WNBA players showed up with T-shirts bringing awareness to the lack of financial equity they have in their league.

Christine Brennan has faced criticism for her coverage of Caitlin Clark.

Instead of standing up to that scrutiny, she’s decided to take her business to outlets like Outkick and Newsmax as she begins selling her new book.

The road to the right-wing grift has many, many paths.

What if we put it on real ESPN instead of a streaming service that primarily houses content aimed at children...???? 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

There are fewer than five people making a living as women's soccer reporters in the US.

The entire industry runs on them, a dozen or so more people like me who have writing jobs that sometimes include woso, and everything else is done by freelancers or for free.

#ICA25 taking place in Colorado means I had a week of two of my (very different) favorite things - walking through the mountains and talking media and women's sports!

Special thank you to the Sport Communication Interest Group for their recognition of my research as the SCIG Top Student Paper.

"I don't know when I'll be safe to travel."

"The uncertainty of like, 'yeah, I can go home, but not knowing if I can come back' is something that is very scary, not just for me but players across the league."

"It was very sad I couldn't go with 🇻🇪 National Team."

World Athletics to introduce mandatory sex testing for female competitions Sebastian Coe, president of World Athletics, says the governing body feels the mandatory tests for athletes are "a really important way of providing confidence".

Welp, here it is. World Athletics is going back to mandatory sex testing for all women. This is something that was done for years, but abandoned in the 1990's because it was invasive, discriminatory, and also useless. news.sky.com/story/bluesk...

For outlets like TheGIST, Just Women's Sports, The IX, & a handful of newsletters & podcasts, routine coverage of women's sports is central to their mission. I wrote about what this means for the sports media landscape in my new article in Comm & Sport journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

Despite sky high viewership numbers and sell out crowds, mainstream sports media still has a ways to go in terms of valuing women's sports in their offerings. BUT there are multiple, dedicated women's sports media outlets that have been working to center women's sports in their coverage.

Pretty big basketball game last night as Notre Dame's Hannah Hidalgo notched 29 points and 10 rebounds to upset the legendary UConn WBB program. Good thing when I went to ESPN this morning I could see that Bronny is doing well in the G League 🤦‍♀️

I thought women's college basketball was cool now...?

Maybe you'll laugh, maybe you'll cry. Either way, I hope this helps add to the growing body of literature exposing Barstool and OutKick as dangerous sites that normalize the platforming of misogyny - and for OutKick in particular, transphobia.

The coverage poises readers to lash out as they process the discomfort in choosing between supporting Team USA on the international stage or supporting Megan Rapinoe’s “anti-American agenda.”

I used coverage of the USWNT to show how Barstool Sports and OutKick carefully construct their preferred identity of the True American Sports Fan (🤮). However, the outlets’ constructed fan identity stands at odds with the progressive values of the 2019 & 2023 teams.

Welp. The timing of this one feels a little dystopian - but all the same, I’m proud to share my latest article on popular misogyny and populism, published in Media, Culture, & Society.
