This is something I would never have done previously, not only because of my lack of confidence, but also in fear that no one would care. However, I was able to overcome both barriers because of the opportunities I had with Results."
Because of this lesson, I feel a lot more passionate about advocacy. Beyond writing L.T.E.’s or sending emails, I even find myself speaking with peers and teachers at school about issues such as world health.
Thus, not only did this event provide me the opportunity to speak with policy makers, but showed me that my advocacy mattered. That it matters. And, that as long as there are people open to listening, it will continue to matter.
I question if anyone even cares, or if I’m simply making yet another entry into the infinite abyss that is the internet. However, speaking with someone–a parliamentarian, no less–showed me that there are actually people on the other end of the screen who are passionate about these issues.
At this event, I not only had the opportunity to develop my skills in an unfamiliar situation, but also saw firsthand that advocacy truly does have an impact.
Often, when I write L.T.E.’s or send emails, I question how much of an impact my actions truly have.
"One of my absolute most memorable moments with Results Canada was the TB Hill Day. For the first time, I had the opportunity to engage directly with a Parliamentarian. In this case, it was with Senator Bev Busson.

I’m grateful to have the ongoing community support of Results staff and volunteers, who continue to encourage, refine, and champion my growth as an advocate for a healthier world."
I also apply it to various domestic issues that I work with closely and that I’m passionate about, predominantly related to health equity.
This means continued advocacy, both when there is no clear “win” and after the excitement of a “win” has died down.
Importantly, advocacy is not a skill that I have limited to my involvement with Results Canada.
This was an important opportunity to practice advocacy beyond the “win”. Ongoing advocacy communicates that the issues we raise are not a momentary concern, but worthy of sustained effort and targeted action.
Although the budget for the International Assistance Envelope was not increased in the 2025 Federal Budget, the publication of these LTEs led to my writing letters to my Member of Parliament and other Parliamentarians.
My first submission of a letter-to-the-editor (LTE) was published both by the @calgaryherald.com and the @winnipegsun.bsky.social. It called for Canada's continued leadership in international development through increased funding and received good public engagement, including disagreement.
"As a researcher, I'm skilled at writing for scientific audiences. Writing to Parliamentarians or for lay audiences are equally important skills that I'm happy to have refined through my Fellowship with Results Canada.

Health trends are declining, we need to get back on track and this investment is a solid down payment to the $340 million that’s needed
New research out today showing the collapse of Canada's development assistance as featured in the @ottawacitizen.com this morning 🧵👇👇 @policyalternatives.ca ottawacitizen.com/public-servi...
Why? because Canadians care about global health. And for good reason. Not only does it save lives, it is also a key to global stability.
That's what we call a win-win.

Today's investment is a solid and timely down payment towards this goal.
We celebrate today, but keep advocating tomorrow. We’ll continue to call on Canada to build on their downpayment to get to $340 million over 5 years for the GFF.
Thank you to our amazing volunteer advocates and partners. For months, we’ve raised our collective voice for Canada to invest in the GFF to help reverse concerning global trends such as worsening maternal health outcomes and rising child mortality rates.
Today, Secretary of State Randeep Sarai announced that Canada would commit an initial $190 million to the Global Financing Facility (GFF), an achievement for global health 🎉 #cdnpoli
