OPINION: A big reason why students with math anxiety underperform — they just don’t do enough math Students with high levels of math anxiety perform worse not just in math classes, but also in STEM classes more broadly. They avoid math as much as possible. Science, technology and engineering educators need to have math anxiety on their radar, too.

I used to have my classes make math review board games. They make up the theme, rules, design, and some way of having players review math problems from the year. Usually using construction paper or big pieces of butcher paper.

Tomorrow, a certain online mega-retailer launches a book sale, just days before Indie Bookstore Day on 4/26. This is no coincidence; Bookstore Day is one of the largest revenue drivers for indies.

Indies need our support to thrive & build community spaces for all...mega-retailers do not.

Just watched a fantastic webinar from @mathematize4all.bsky.social! She mentioned at the end the metaphor of some concepts being “load-bearing walls”. I’ll be thinking about this more! Such a powerful idea. What foundations need to be strong to hold up the rest of the math building?

If you like tapas and Spanish food, Triana in Nob Hill is pretty outstanding. Great wine, sangria, food, and service.

Albuquerque is like that. We live in the foothills and it can be snowing but “in town” 5 miles away or on the west side, nada. There’s also a 1000 ft elevation drop between here and there, so that makes a difference!

Hard to choose, but I would probably say Notice and Wonder. That seems to be the one I fall back on, even with other resources like WODB, Slow Reveal, Same but Different. It seems to allow for more open responses and can get to patterns and structure as well.

Agreed! That’s always a struggle with learning intentions and success criteria in math. We don’t want to take away the discovery or give step by step instructions. This post is a great way to frame objectives for teachers!

Also in cooking and baking, maybe a precision estimate works pretty well with spices. A little more or less won’t usually make or break the dish like changing other ingredients might.

Precision is very important for medication doses, but not necessarily for food portions. A handful of chips is fine, but a handful of pills is not ok.

And to echo others, teachers and leaders, repeat this until it sticks:

You know NO undocumented people.

NOT families, NOT children, NOT anyone.

You DO NOT suspect anyone is.

You have NO information otherwise.

Silence is golden. Move on.

I prefer 3 Reads. It think it helps them make meaning of the action of the problem rather than just go through a series of rote steps. I’ve seen it work well in K-8!

K-5 Teachers, or anyone who teaches in a self-contained classroom: we know teaching ALL the subjects is a monumental task. What are some ways you wish a math coach could support you? (can be related to content, standards, pedagogy, resources, anything!) #ITeachMath #EduSky #ElemMath
