1. Given Nietzsche’s distinct individualism within existential discourse, I believe he is expressing the staring back of the abyss as the realization of absolute freedom. We stare into nothingness with the hope that something will manifest that serves as a liberator to our angst and ennui.
2. However, when the abyss stares back, we are not faced with the enlightenment of salvation. Instead, we are faced with a terrifying reality in which we are absolutely free. There are no gods or demons invested in the everydayness of human affairs.
3. It is only us. Only the human condition. What good we see in this world is what we put into it. What evil we experience is the cultivation of our own works.
4. The stare of the abyss is our own reflection, and we realize that our liberation is contingent on our will, our resolve to cope with the human condition and to do something to make our existence meaningful.
🧵 How I understand Nietzsche’s passage on the abyss:

Congratulations to Prakash Bhave! He's our volunteer of the month for March 2026.
A member of our North Carolina team, he is doing everything he can to build a future in which his kids don't feel the effects of gridlocked politics.
Let's get this done, Prakash! 🦾
No living North Carolinian has ever known a General Assembly controlled by the GOP without Phil Berger at the helm.

This is the end of an era in NC politics. Absolutely wild to see.
On @fox5dc.com.web.brid.gy, Lindsey had a clear message: No matter which party does it, gerrymandering makes it harder for voters to hold elected officials accountable.
The time for change has come, and Forward is ready to empower voters to choose their own elected officials.

This is wild!
The resignation comes as election officials are still working to determine who won in Rockingham Sheriff Sam Page’s primary campaign to oust longtime Republican Senate leader Phil Berger.

@mapblake.bsky.social's resource is the best explainer I've seen of how this process works. It's still here & free. For now. As Marc Maron would say--do it up

This made me laugh.
I see where this meme is going, and it is fairly accurate, but I would say there has been crossover of kinds in late modernist thinking. For instance, Husserl’s work in phenomenology took him to eidetic reduction, which essentially holds intuition as foundational to knowledge.
