"Thank you, Samuel," she said to the guard.
The man stared at her, clearly wondering how she knew his name.
"Bertram, I presume. Follow me. Eldritch tells me you know your letters and numbers?"
Bert nodded, still shocked by the moment.
"Good, fill this order for me, then. My eyesight is not what it once was. The locations are all written down, along with the prices you need to haggle for." She tossed him an additional coinpurse, which felt much heavier than his own. "I will see you at the eight for a meal." With that, she turned on her heels and walked in a straight line towards the Clock Tower.
The guard looked to Bert and shook his head in confusion.
Bert offered the man a smile: he had grown used to dealing with wizards. The key was to accept their ways and offer them the help they asked for. They would pay back the cost a thousand times over. He hefted his pack, tied both coinpurses to his belt, patted his sword and made his way into the city.

Bert had been given plenty of coin by Cat and reached into his coinpurse to count out the correct amount. “A cosigner?” he asked the man.
“A citizen of Cadenport who will vouch for your good behavior with your weapon,” the guard said in the same bored voice.
“Oh,” Bert replied. “I am here to visit Fisca Wise.”
“Haw haw,” the guard replied, but looked up. “She hasn’t left her tower for years. A cosigner needs to meet you at the gate. That woman isn’t going to show up for some country bumpkin, no offense.” He said it in a way that carried nothing but offense. “Just leave the sword here. There’s a four copper fee, but you’ve already paid more.”
“Pass the form,” a voice said.
Bert and the guard both turned to see an elderly woman in a red cloak that covered her body. She was taller than most women, and her long gray hair was washed and braided carefully. Her eyebrows were unruly, but she looked otherwise well-put-together. She offered Bert a kind smile while she signed the parchment the guard had turned over.

Claiming vibes, but I wanted to get this in because tomorrow's word allows me to just continue on this scene 🙂

I just realized I've edited this part quite a bit since I screenshot it.

The clock only has a single hand now.

The city is Cadenport, since it's a port (clever, right?!) and the lives there are at the mercy of the clock, cadence.

It's a fun little change from our backwater MC.

The bootlickers are worse because not only do they not get anything out of this, they actually are worse off.

They are eating themselves and buying merch while they do it.

While Bert felt his understanding of this strange timekeeping was growing solid, his understanding of how the Water Clock worked was way beyond. He looked through the many pages of technical drawings, but the best he could make out was that the river flow turned large wheels, which in turn spun smaller and smaller gears until eventually the hands of the clock turned at an exact rate. The tower had four sides, each with a clock face so that everyone in the city could make out the exact time. Any buildings above two stories were required to ask for permission to build, as it was against city law to block view of the clock. Squinting, Bert tried to make out the signature on one of the technical drawings. It said, F. Wizened, awfully close to Fisca Wise, the current wizard of Cadenport. There was no way...was there? Bert had a suspicion Fisca Wise was going to be as enigmatic as his friend Eldritch.
"Do you know why they built the Clock Tower?" Bert asked. "Did they always intend the city to become a trading port and hub for The Capital?"
The driver didn't bother to look at him. "No idea, kid. It's just always been there, I suspect."

3: Hot Rocks
Bert stared as Cat wormed her way out of her leather boots.
They had found water pooled in between some larger rocks by the stream near their campsite. Yellow had lit small fires nearby and heated the rocks with short bursts of flame. The water held in by the rocks was now more than warm enough to bathe in. Bert had washed his face quickly to test the water, but insisted Cat go first.
Bert watched as she piled her belt, cloak and dagger in a neat pile on a log and unbraided her hair. She mixed some wood ash from their fire with water and rubbed it into her skin and hair. She had a small pile of it ready near the water as well. Bert watched and found his imagination taking over...
"I said, hey!" she shouted, snapping her fingers in the air.
"Huh? What?" he replied, coming back to the real world.
"You're staring. Turn around, Bert." She raised her hands halfway up, asking, what do you think you're doing?
"Oh, I'm sorry Cat. Of course. I'll clean up what's left of our camp. Call when you're done." He did as promised, giving her one last look before turning around. He was delighted to see a sly smile on her face. It had been ungentlemanly, but she knew he didn't mean anything by it. Plopping down beside a resting Yellow, he sat and whispered to his

I thought about not posting this because I only use duration in this boring bit, but I do love this book.

Solar Umbrella was my first book and is (somehow) a hopeful climate change novel.

I'm very proud of it. The book, not the snip

68: A View
Bert sat on the edge of the Clock Tower of Cadenport, moving his head from field to harbor every now and then. A fog had formed and thickened, and he needed to use his spyglass to see the boats sent by Elric the Fleetmaster coming up from the sea. In the field, in breaks of the fog, he could make out people’s faces—they were much closer. He even saw that idiot, Percival Bankes. He was sitting on a folding wooden chair, eating and drinking while others ran around him trying to prepare for their march on the city.
Strangely, a group of soldiers was pulling an enormous box, covered in dark canvas. It seemed to be on wheels and they were moving it with the siege equipment. Bert wondered if it was some strange weapon, or just an enormous box of wine and snacks for the High King’s finest fighting men and women?

Fuck Amazon, but just having books available to anyone in the world, on demand, is insane for someone like me who can go months without a sale. No way I'm paying $15 just because.

Android is supposed to be human-shaped 👍 this confused me as a kid because r2d2 is called a "droid" but obviously isn't human shaped.

Star Wars just does its own thing I guess 🙂
