Excited to see our study on antenatal #melatonin for #cardiovascular deficits in FGR highlighted by @jphysiol.bsky.social 🫀💊
The findings paint a nuanced picture, melatonin may offer protection, but it’s not uniform, highlighting the importance of understanding therapies fully in large animal models

New paper from Dr Zahrah Azman et al. shows preterm growth-restricted lambs with asphyxia have impaired vascular contractility and heightened cardiac adrenergic responses, insights that matter for neonatal cardiovascular outcomes. Read & share 👇 pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41432623/ #FGR #CardioSci
Physiology can’t be shortcut, and losing these models risks future neonatal care. @pediatricresearch.bsky.social

New Ped Res paper from collaborators across four countries examines the weakening of the perinatal translation pipeline due to the global decline in large-animal research.
Aaaahhhhh, that’s a sign it time for holidays

Honoured that our team Prof Sehgal and Zahrah Azman received a @heartfoundationau.bsky.social Vanguard Grant for our work that aims to reduce peri vascular fibrosis in the hearts of growth restricted neonates. Working towards the best start to life possible for our smallest most vulnerable babies.

The cardiopulmonary transition at birth is often compromised in infants with fetal growth restriction (FGR) or born small for gestational age (SGA).
Early detection of myocardial stress & pulmonary dysfunction could be key to better outcomes.

NEW PAPER
Compromised cardiopulmonary transition in fetal growth restricted and small for gestational age neonates
Suboptimal fetal growth → altered cardiac structure/function → higher risk of impaired adaptation at birth, respiratory morbidity, and long-term CV risk.

Excited to share our latest paper on the pathogenesis of preterm intraventricular hemorrhage. Our study sheds new light on the complex interplay between the contribution of fetal and maternal factors. Check out the full paper to learn more about the important findings! karger.com/dne/article/...
That’s awesome -Abdul!! Congratulations
Yes!!!! Trying to make it stick :)
Me too!
Really looking forward to meeting all the students involved in the SRI INSPIRES at the congress in Charlotte! @sriwomenshealth.bsky.social
In this podcast, ahead of World Kidney Day 2025, I discuss why preterm birth and post-natal kidney injury can lead to increased mild kidney disease risk in adulthood. Early detection and treatment can reduce progression.

I am thankful to work in a very supportive female led workplace, but it can still feel like trying to work with one hand behind your back.
There has been some improvements but the gender pay gap remains.

In this cohort study, PISCOPO et al. analyze data from the the Australian and New Zealand Neonatal Network (ANZNN) to investigate the relationship between birth weight and IVH in very preterm neonates @atulmalhotra.bsky.social

In work completed by my fabulous PhD student Beth Piscopo, we undertook a large retrospective cohort study showing in very preterm infants the presence of SGA or suspected FGR is associated with a reduced rate of IVH, compared to infants without SGA/FGR.

I am wondering about my upcoming conferences in USA too? Firstly for boycot reasons and now because air travel seem much less safe there!
Our first 2025 pub shows that growth restricted fetuses have significantly reduced dendrite outgrowth in hippocampal neurons. Reduced dendritogenesis in FGR offspring has implications for the development of hippocampal connectivity and long-term function.

So well deserved @drabdulrazak.bsky.social. Congratulations
Thrilled to contribute to this groundbreaking work on cell therapy, where we successfully demonstrated that a targeted dose of stem cells can be obtained from extremely preterm infants and safely reinfused
