I have never tried to grow dahlias before, so I really, really hope I won't just have shriveled tubers to show for it...!

(Reposted because the picture quality ended up really rubbish and these flowers are too gorgeous for bad photos. 💖)

Four dahlia images from Dahlias by Linn's webpage. 1 is Giovanna, a small dahlia with an apricot center shading to pink. 2 is Emmas Hug, a small dahlia with more pointed petals with a dark red center shading to apricot. 3 is Take Off, an anemone style dahlia with a creamy yellow center shading to white then purple. 4 is Zingaro, another small standard dahlia with a cerise center and petals that are yellow shading to pink.

Creme de Cognac, which has petals of dark red (more towards the center where they are still furled up) and apricot.

Somehow ended up hyperfixating on the idea of dahlias. After deciding we can probably grow them away from slugs, I spent many hours trying to narrow 100s of beautiful options down to a few I love that also look good together. The 4 together will go in the planter, the other 3 in pots on the deck!

I have so many prejudices against French cars that when I saw that it was a Citroen I was like "Oh yeah that explains it". 😆 Hope you get your baby back soon!

underrated is how cathartic the "hide post for me" button is. there's something very soothing about sending harmless things that annoy you to the shadow realm in a way that doesn't impact anyone else.

Syphilis was first called grande verole or the "great pox" by the French. Other historical names have included "button scurvy", sibbens, frenga, and dichuchwa, among others. Since it was a disgraceful disease, the disease was known in several countries by the name of their neighbouring, often hostile country.[130] The English, the Germans, and the Italians called it "the French disease", while the French referred to it as the "Neapolitan disease". The Dutch called it the "Spanish/Castilian disease". To the Turks it was known as the "Christian disease", whilst in India, the Hindus and Muslims named the disease after each other.

Today I learned that syphilis is New World! I don't know how I'd missed that it wasn't around before 1492 but that explains a lot...! All in all terrifying reading, do NOT get syphilis (so many did!!), but the way different countries named the disease is amazing.

Digital painting of a dark cloudy sky. The clouds are churning and curling in a chaos of all shades of grey.

We report on a windy afternoon: there are all these trees which are still painstakingly growing leaves, and flowers too. We can tell this is not an easy day for them. All those flowery trees are shaking, and the petals are flying all over, forming a spring blizzard.
