A year ago today, 2,400 of our colleagues found they no longer had jobs, many found out as they were denied entry onto campus. Their lives changed and the fate of their work remains in limbo.
It would appear that many, if not all, of the firings affecting NIOSH are being reversed. These happened back in APRIL and JUNE, gutting our personnel.
No other communication- just a short email (without CDC or HHS signatures) stating RIF recission.

The Senate Appropriations Committee's FY2026 budget recommends NIOSH's full funding and staffing at pre-RIF levels. The measure passed by 26 - 3, and recognizes NIOSH as the only federal entity researching occupational safety. Their message regarding cuts to worker safety is clear:

Because of the layoffs at NIOSH, multiple lifesaving programs have been shut down even though they’re required by law.

Congress established NIOSH in 1970 under the Occupational Safety and Health Act to “assure as far as possible every working man and woman in the Nation safe and healthful working conditions and to preserve our human resources.”
Over 90% of NIOSH employees have received “reduction-in-force” letters, placing them on administrative leave ahead of permanent layoffs.
Huge thank you to the states suing over cuts to HHS. RFKJ quietly fired the rest of the staff at CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Friday evening. NIOSH was established by congress with the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970.

This post shows the official HHS X account claiming that no CDC employees were terminated Friday, which is misinformation.
So everyone's clear: this is a bald-faced lie.
The "required notice" was in fact, a TERMINATION notice required by the WARN Act (one of the few laws compliance is being attempted for) which mandates notice for mass layoffs. NIOSH workers have been placed on admin leave- no work will be conducted.
Firefighters risk their lives—not just in flames, but from cancer caused by toxic exposure on the job.
NIOSH’s Firefighter Cancer Registry tracked these cases to protect those who protect us.
But thanks to Trump’s cuts, the program is offline, its future uncertain.
